Use things around the house whenever you can!

If you're like me and are always looking for something to use for sprouting seeds, consider looking for things around your house. I discovered that those cartons that eggs come in work really well. I cut the top part off of the carton. I will use that as a tray to catch water. I then go through each egg compartment and poke a small hole at the bottom. If the carton is Styrofoam, a toothpick will work. It will probably also work for cardboard. After poking the hole, I go get my soil. Make sure that you have really good draining soil that is mixed with something like perlite. I like to use a soil that is designed for improved drainage and that has a fertilizer built into it. You can find these types of soil in organic forms now. I then put a small amount of soil mix into each egg compartment and plant my seeds. I then water it well. Sometimes I will take a sheet of clear plastic wrap and cover the container until I just begin to see things sprout. Alternatively, if you have a clear plastic bag that's large enough to hold the egg carton, or half egg carton if you are only using half, put your seed tray inside that. Seal that baggy up and you have yourself a make shift greenhouse that is sure to make germination process go faster.
