Plumeria question continued

SmileHi all,

Here's cotinuation on my plumeria question.   Allison, thanks for the info.   What I plan on doing is taking my Plumeria in and out of a shed during the winter months.   P. S.   I have no room in my house for the Plumeria, i.e. next to a window etc.   Should I dig up Plumeria and just keep it in the shed without soil?

The Plumeria is in the original pot from when I purchased it.   I bought the plant about 3 or 4 months ago, and yes, it has grown some.   I have it sitting in a future transplant pot.     I want to keep the Plumeria alive somehow during the winter months but I'm afraid not in my house.

Here's a later pic of my Plumeria.

Moving my plumeria outside

As it turns out, my plumeria wintered over inside rather than a continual growth with leaves etc.  I looked at it this a.m. and noticed the tip is green with tiny growh.  Soooo, off it will go outside!  I think next winter, rather than take inside again, I will dig it up and store it in my shed.

New growth

Here is new growth on Plummeria since I moved it outside a few weeks back.  The second day, I saw an amazing amount of new growth.  Wow, in two days!

I  keep all of my tropical

I  keep all of my tropical stuff inside over the winter. I've had plumeria, brugs, bromeliads, Stephanotis floribunda, and several otherthings inside all winter long. I notice that my plumeria grew more slowly than it would other wise. With the exception of my brugs, the other tropical stuff needed less water than it would have during the summer months. Personally, I'd rather keep the plants inside in pots than chance having them in an unheated space. These are tropical plants whose ideal natural environment has them in an area where night time low temperatures don't typically dip below 55 or 60 and when they do, they'd need to be protected. That's just my opinion.

You do have a point sk.  I'm limited for space inside.  I think I'll get a thermometer and hang inside the shed.  It seems much warmer in the shed than one would think though.  I moved my plumeria outside today and re-staked it to stand erect.  I'm going to HD tomorrow so I'll get some perlite and either Jungle Growth potting soil or MG potting mix.  Not sure which.  The plant still needs to be transplanted to a larger pot.  It is still in original pot from when I purchased it.

If you can get Jungle

If you can get Jungle Growth, then I'd get that. It seems to have stuff added to it that makes for much better drainage than MG does......and plumies don't like to have wet feet, so anything that gets the water through better is best. I usually mix Jungle Growth (or African Violet mix is great, too) with perlite....about 1/2 of each -- or at the most 2/3 soil to 1/3 perlite.....Just make sure you've got LOTS of perlite mixed in. The soil will drain much better that way!

Okay SK, I'll go tomorrow

Okay SK, I'll go tomorrow to try and fine Jungle Growth and Perlite.  HD didn't have either the other day.  I'll try Lowe's.

Okay Allison, I may move it inside.  I have only 1 spot.  Thanks maw, jbaby and Dorothy D.  All very good information.  If I move it inside, how often should I water?  Still not sure what to do but I know I need to make a decision soon.  Weather has been 70's 80's during the day, night has been 60's.  We may get colder weather soon.  Allison, I'm in zone 9a.

Here's the latest pic of my Plumeria.  I took it just a few minutes ago.   I previewed this first and pic was not attached.  It said pic too large 57. something but I resized it to 47.  don't know what happened but want you to see current pic of my Plumeria.

 Me I have been growing

Me I have been growing Plumira for years.

I would trans plant it into new pot with a good draining soil.

I use Jungle Growth with 50 percent perlite mixed to slight moist for all potted plants inside and out. ' Plumeira gallery uses this too !' This way you can check the roots see how healthy if they need room .

What zone are you . If I recall it's warm there ?

I would either let it grow or let it go dormant . Not both it will be so confused .

If it is sunny and warm during the day 60 above it will be fine outside but if it goes under 60 at night where ever you put it garage/shed it's going to go dormant.

Then March/April or after frost depending where you live when the nights and days are warm and ground is warm too  it will start coming back.

What ever you decide to do dormant or grow !

Cool> If you want it to go dormant no sense in bring it in and out.

Most people do take them out of soil clean them off dry and place in non freezing dry area.     You can also cover it with a blanket. Hek you can take it then wrap in newspaper anything dry and stick it in a closet under your bed and where safe , dry, warm for the Winter !

If you want to keep it in the pot just put in warm , non freezing area let soil dry out no need to water it they can rot if it gets cold , cover it .

Laughing >> If you are in zone and want to keep it growing . I'd re-pot with large pot, new soil mix I mentioned above. These plants if in the right zone and environment do not go dormant. they bloom year round in Hawaii where their from ! to bad you don't have a window or corner grow light ! We live in a mobile home not many or any sunny windows either. Last night here was in 50's and will be just about all week even tho days are sunny 70's to 80's begin of next week out dinning room table is covered with Desert rose plants and new rare Elephant ears with a window and grow light rigged over them . No other plant to put them. We had to do this last year also . I could let my Desert Rose go dormant but want them to bloom year round ! they seem to take so long to grow roots and leaves in Spring. Our garden helpers trans planted my largest one Saturday it's in a mega Hugh pot ! I must get the picture out of the camera it has grown so much ! These are in the same family as Plumeiras !

Our plants are all grown in the ground we are zone 9/10.

Hi Frilly,

To find out how to add more pictures, please go to FAQS, and look at Al's updated info on photos and how to upload them.  This was just updated yesterday, and is very easy to follow.  If I can help further, PLMK.  Have a good day,

you also give it a drink of

you also give it a drink of water about once a month too,am i right Preciousjoy?

It's a better idea to leave

It's a better idea to leave it in the pot with the soil and transplant in the spring.  If the shed is going to be cold it is better to cover it somehow or bring it inside  and remove the leaves and put it in a closet out of the way until spring.  My hubby has a rubbermaid shed that is as cold as the temps outside so this is not a good place for the plumeria.
