Hi everyone-

Are there differences between these two other than bloom time? Are there any foliage differences? I received a lovely plant last year for Christmas, but it had no blooms and no tags. It does have small buds right now. Just wondering if anyone knows :) thanks!

These little guys will bloom

These little guys will bloom sooner than you think!  I got some rooted and unrooted cuttings in trade last fall (probably around Sept/Oct), and they all bloomed already.  Even the unrooted one that was only about 6 inches long!  They're all growing pretty fast now.  I love the way the new growth looks. Can't wait to see them in full bloom at the end of the year!

Christmas cacti have

  • Christmas cacti have scalloped stem segments and bloom at the stem tips.

  • Thanksgiving cacti have 2-4 pointy teeth along the edges of the sections and will bloom earlier than Christmas cactus if left to natural day-length.

  • Easter cacti have rounded teeth along the segments and bloom primarily in the spring but may also periodically re-bloom at other times of year.

My Mom always had lots of

My Mom always had lots of  this type of cactus and one or two she called Easter cactus.  It bloomed around easter. I have checked some sites and they list easter cactus along with Christmas and thanksgiving cactus. It is true that the "leaves" are different and I also think there are some differences in the blossoms. I would check some sites and see the pictures they have of the different types. Pictures really help me. Sometimes they are called Holiday cactus.

Thanks Dawn-I will

Thanks Dawn-I will definitely try to do some research today. Pics usually help me too.

Thanks Maw-I think I may

Thanks Maw-I think I may have a Thanksgiving cactus. The edges are extremely jagged and when I looked at the buds today I saw that they are already gaining color. I'm assuming I'll have some great blooms right around Thanksgiving-hopefully they don't fall off. Surprised

Flora, you asked a good question...I believe the main difference is in the edges of the leaves, and the tips.  The Thanksgiving Cactus has leaf segments that are jagged like teeth on the end..  The tip of the segments on the Christmas Cactus has a  more rounded/blunt shape.  I have one of each kind, and that variation is easy to spot when looking at both.   I brought mine inside before the buds started forming in hopes of avoiding  the shock of changing their environment  that   often makes buds drop off.

Good luck with your cacti.   maw
