AMARYLLIS

Can I start Amaryllis in the house now and hope they will bloom around Christmas? If so how do I do it? They have been in the frig for several months since I took them out of my yard, because they haven't bloomed for 3 years.

Hi Sky, since you have the bulb(s) I like the idea of putting it on top of pebbles such as the gray river stones, or the mixed color stones which can be bought in the craft section of lots of stores. Good luck with your Amaryllis Adventure!!

If you're growing amaryllis
If you're growing amaryllis in a pot, they like to be a little crowded. Plant one large bulb (or 2 smaller ones) in a pot with an inch or two of space all around the bulb. I've got some planted in pots 6"-8" wide and about 6" tall. Different types take different amounts of time to bloom, so you may not get blooms for Christmas. I have heard that they can be tricky to get to rebloom when you're growing them indoors. And I don't think you needed to keep them in the fridge. If you need to store them, I think they would be ok at room temperature. (But don't take my word on that...I'm no expert!) Everything I've read about getting potted indoor plants to rebloom says after the leaves start to yellow & die back, you should cut them off and store the whole pot in a dark cool place (like a closet). Some sites say to tip the pot on it's side. I don't know what that's supposed to do. I know they don't like to be disturbed, so when you're transerring them from a pot to the garden (or vice versa) they may not flower the following year.
If you're going to try to pot these, I'd put each bulb in a small-isb pot in a sunny window. You might even want to mix some bone meal in with the potting soil. Good luck with this. I've got a bunch I planted in my garden last fall that didn't bloom this year. I'm hoping if I don't disturb them, they'll bloom in the spring!

skygardening, I leave my
skygardening,
I leave my amaryllis in a large pot all year round. I live in zone 7. It blooms every winter. I have to bring them inside before 1st frost. Maybe this will help.
