I have found it very helpful to weed out bad seeds from good fertile ones, especially rare and tropicals, buy tossing them in a glass of luke warm water for a day. Most seeds that swim on the top are dead seeds, the ones that sink are fertile seeds.

 I've tested this myself ...using both type of seeds
