Ok y'all how do I take care of my water/pond plants over winter?

I have several that were given to me...what do I do with them over winter?

I have some water lilies and several other water plants that I don't know the names.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thank You

Google ad for ponds

Have you noticed the goggle ads go along with the article very helpful asset ! There is one Amazing water gardens Tampa Bay. There you see plants/descriptions pictures . There are hardy water Lily's for zone 3 even .

maybe this sight and other google sights will also help you ID your plants.

Now there are Tropical plants too . When buying plants for a pond or your growing area best to check the plants zone except if you plan on properly Winterizing you Tropicals or growing as annuals and starting new each year.

Pond plants

Keep things simple ! if the plants are hardy and you are in a zone or have heater where pond won't freeze you can keep the plants growing . Other wise you will have to winterize your plants by letting them go dormant or bringing them inside somehow.

Sharry had excellent answers to your questions also !

It's going t depend on your zone and type of plants you are growing.

I am in 7b,8a depends who

I am in 7b,8a depends who you ask haha and all my plants that are in pots are cut down to abt 2 or 3 inches and put in the deepest part of the pond. come spring time I just lift the ones that grow in the shallow part back into there place and they grow just fine. the poted plants I have arewater lily's which are grown in the deep part so all I do is cut them down and drop back into there place. the ones in the shallow are my pickle rush, iris, taro those are cut down and set by the water lilies in the deep part. this is my first year with floaters and I have them in a tub and will be put in my shed, for the simple fact that leaves always find there way to my pond and it's easier to get them all out and be able to see the leaves to clean them. maybe take pictures of your plants so we can identify them and be able to help you with each one..  cause they require different needs for different zones..

Try this google HGTV, click on gardening, then in the search section put in winterize a water garden. I think that might help you out. I seen it on tv but didn't pay much attention to what the did with the plants. TheresaLaughing

I've got a natural

I've got a natural pond and I have had lotus, water lilies, cattails, water hyacinth, iris and pickerel rush planted in the edges. I'm in zone 8, SC. and all this over winters just fine right where it is. Smaller water feature ponds may need to be drained and plants stored for the winter as Preciousjoy said. I would think it depends on how cold your winters get and also if the water freezes. Just my thoughts.

Do you plan on draining your

Do you plan on draining your pond for the Winter ? water lilies and most other water plants can be kept in your basement / shed none freezing area to go dormant for Winter . I know your plants were given to you when buying pond plants and you don't live in the Tropics good idea to buy plants that can be kept dormant for winter. Check your plan types see if this will work for you.

I don't have a water garden,

I don't have a water garden, but I have heard that if the plants are hardy to your zone and your pond won't freeze solid, they'll be fine right where they are.  I think (but don't take my word alone!) that you can safely overwinter just about anything except tropical water lilies.  Some plants can't take even a bit of frost.  But a lot of plants can survive even under a thin layer of ice.  I know that Louisiana iris and taro elephant ears will survive the winter here if they're growing in a pond or in the ground.  So like everyone else said, it depends on exactly what kind of plants you have.  If you can't find info for your plants here or online, you may want to ask your local county extension or local nurseries.
