Printer-friendly versionI've been looking on line at these and was wondering if anyone had one and how they like it.  The price of #2 heating oil is getting so high that I'm looking into other heat alternatives.  Any info would be greatly appreicated.  Thanks

Wood here is around 300-325 cut and split....  but we have all kinds here already in the yard

Wow, Mainegal that is

Wow, Mainegal that is cheaper than it was here in December!  We fortunately have used less than 1/2 tank of oil this year.... but on the other hand we have burned about 3 cord of wood... so 6 of this and half dozen of the other.... The thing is tho our wood we burnt this year was wood we had for free... which is what really helps us... but it is almost gone... might get thru next winter with what we have, then we will have to buy more again.... so... is it cheaper?  I dunno.... but I do think it is alot warmer heat.... if you can keep the stove going....

Thanks everyone for the

Thanks everyone for the input.

#2 heating oil is $3.39.9 here and going up daily

I know what you mean about

I know what you mean about the price of oil.  The man that delivers our oil apologizes for the cost, but there is nothing he can do about it.

You can also check

You can also check Craigslist and Uncle Henry's..... both good places to go looking for used wood stoves....

I really prefer a wood

I really prefer a wood stove the inserts just don't seem to be very efficent. If you install a wood stove really do research on the installation  because if they are not put in right they are very dangerous. I have an ELECTRIC furnace for heat and it is really expensive so we heat almost entirely with our wood stove. Watch thrift stores and garage sales for a better price on a stove if you choose to go that way.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

I had one when I lived in Maine too....

I had one in my house, it had the blower on it.... I didn't find that it produced alot of heat....  I like my woodstove alot better, get lots more heat from it.  I have used a pellett stove before though, and that was just about as good as a woodstove... reasonably priced too....

We have a Buck brand wood

We have a Buck brand wood stove.  WE LOVE IT.  A nice man that sells us split dried oak wood delivered and stacked a face cord for $60.  Wood heat is the warmest heat you can have.  Even with air purifers you do have alot of dust.  Every year we say we are going to remove the wood stove and install gas logs.  And every year with the price of gas we decide to wait one more year.  Dale

Saw them last Sunday

I don't have these, but saw an ad in the USA Weekend magazine supplement that comes with the Sunday paper. They were offering "handmade" inserts for just the price of the fireplace insert & including the heat unit free. The styles offered were attractive, mobile and could be easily moved from room to room. Haven't priced any of them, so don't know if it would be a savings or not.
