Water hyacinths need heat

Water hyacinths need heat and full sun in order to grow well and bloom.  I do not winter them over inside because I cannot give them the necessary culture and care for the 5 months they will need to stay inside.  They are cheap at $3.50 in May and by late October  I compost the whole crop!!   And there is a lot to compost once I clean the pond to prepare for the winter months!  One plant turns into bushels!!

Are they considered

Are they considered "invasive" in some parts of the country? I thought I recalled seeing them on a list of stuff that people were advised (or warned) NOT to plant in some areas because they are such prolific growers. It's ashame that they grow so much and so fast because they sure are pretty!

They can be invasive..

In frost free zones they could become a problem if they escape the confines of a pond.

Florida has a big problem with them as they have no predators to help control them.

In my zone 6b they are frost sensitive and quickly disintegrate after a heavy frost.  I prefer to get them out of the pond before a frost because they turn into a mushy mess.Surprised

Thinning

Water hyacinths are prolific growers that will eventually cover the entire water surface if they are not thinned out by August.  They will flower most years in August and September. depending how warm our summers get in any particular year.  I do not save these water plants since they are easily purchased at the beginning ot the growing season.  In the late fall I remove all the plants and compost them.  From one plant I get bushels of composting material.....
