I was told that if you didn't want the roots growing like that. Go out about 15-20 feet radius around the tree and drive some type of hollow pipe into the ground and start watering the tree like that then the roots will start receeding and growing back into the ground. I personally have never tried this but a friend of mine did and it seemed to work on her tree.
