Texas Star Hibiscus from Seed

DorothyD's picture

Has anyone had experience with this hibiscus from seed?  I have both a red and 2 white seedlings and hope to find out when I may see blooms.  Will they bloom first year?  I started the red in Jan and the whites in Feb.

Hibiscus seeds

I am late starting my seeds but will do it just the same.  We have long summers in Texas so I hope I have good luck with them.  I have the Texas Star Red and White, some white with maroon, pink, hardy and some others. I have the two reds now and a yellow.  Grannyrose

Come trade with me

Glad to hear they bloom the first year!

I started some hibiscus seeds too, white and pink in Jan, and mix of seeds in Feb. So far, one white seedling is really tall~ good 10 inches, kinda leggym but it's OK, 2 pink ones are tiny - just 2 inch mas, and I had 2 out of 6 mix color hibiscu seeds germinate within the last week.

So, I am very excited to know they actually bloom the first year, can't wait!!!Tatyana

Dorothy, I have seeds for

Dorothy, I have seeds for both as well.....and if they are anything like some other hibiscus I started from seed, once the weather gets warmer and you're able to put them outside all the time, I suspect they will start growing pretty quickly. Mine started out pretty slow initially last year, (and these were a variety of hardy hibiscus,) but we got deluged with huge amounts of rain, so I think that may have slowed things down. Once we finally had some sunny and warm weather, they started growing like a weed, and I'd guess by July the seeds I had planted had grown into plants that were 5 ft. tall....and they started to bloom up a storm.

I suspect that given the right weather conditions and sufficient water (and I didn't really fertilize mine much at all -- maybe a slow acting fertilizer like Osmacote and Epsom salts -- I did the Epsom salts every couple of weeks -- and about 1/2 cup for a good size pot) that they'll bloom abundantly the first year. I can't wait to start mine.....

Post some pictures as soon as you get some good growth or blooms! I'll look forward to seeing them! I figure that it would be highly unseemly of me not to grow Texas Star Hibiscus if I'm living in Texas!

Texas Star

Thank you Susan, I am very excited about the white ones especially.  Out of 7 only 2 germinated.  I planted only 1 red and that 1 germinated.  I read that they like boggy soil and boy do I have a place for them.
