Ron's Coleus From Seed

Submitted by RonsGarden on Mon, 02/11/2008 - 16:16
This is another shot of Ron's beautiful Coleus that he grows in shade to part-shade. The colors are very unusual. Coleus can also be propagated by rooting cuttings. It makes a striking speciman plant, or looks great in the border.

Nice Coleus
Hi Ron,I started some of the wizard seeds as well the other day and some duck feet coleus as well! I just love coleus! Thanks for sharing all of your beautiful pictures!
Very exciting colors!
Ron, these coleus look so exciting...by the way, do you start new ones every year or bring them indoors for the winter? I remember they get leggy after a while and I would cut off and root branches to get them back to compact plants.

I only keep the small leaf types over the winter months under my grow lights. I let them wilt a bit before watering them...they tend to stay small this way so they wont take over the space I have them. Once I get them outdoors in May is when I water them regularly and repot them to get them ready for putting out into the garden!
The big leaf types would be way to large to fit into my grow light set-up!!

Ron, very nice plants! I'm going to start some Coleus seeds soon and am glad to see yours. How old are they? And where did you germinate them? Giving you a point for sharing this with us.
Thanks,

Hi Maw! I start mine
Hi Maw!
I start mine around the end of March. I sow them in small trays and place them under my grow lights (try to space the seeds out so it will be easier to pick out once the are large enough to transplant). They need light in order to germinate so I just sow them on the soil surface and then mist the surface. To help keep the soil moist I cover the trays with clear plastic wrap. Once they germinate (usually in 7 -10 days) I remove the plastic to prevent damp off. I let them grow until the second set of leaves develop, then I pick them out and pot them up in 6 pack trays. I usually have way too many seedlings at this point so I pick out the ones I want to grow on, just so I have a variety of colors and variations. At this point I start to fertilize them with 20-20-20 at half strength every other week. By mid May the weather is warm enough for me to move them outside in a shaded area. Once they harden off I move them up to 4" pots. The ones in the photo are around 3 months old, and are ready to plant out in the garden. The do grow fast!!
Have fun!!

Names?
Hi Penny!
No I do not have the names of these coleus. The're from a packet of Wizard Mix which contain a number of different colors and color variations. No two are exactly alike!
You can buy named varieties now such as Volcano and Mammoth Mosaic. I prefer the mix!
