My Preg. Onion babies

What I am doing is putting the baby onions in a pot by themselves.  I use potting soil with sand and perilite added.  I mist them regularly and they seem to love it.  I also use eleanors vf 11 for their misting.  This really helps them grow. before long they grow a green tip on the top (the starting of leaves) and these green tips get long compared to the size of the baby.

Once the baby has a long root system going, I take it out of the community pot and plant it into a small pot on its own or possibly with one or two others if I want it grown that way.

Another thing that I just tried them on is a product called "MegaGro". Wow, do they go crazy over that!!!  I will mist the babies with this about every 2 weeks to 1 week. The rest of the time they get their usual vf 11 that they love.

HTH someone.

I am new at growing these and am learning as I go along.

Hi Everyone.......

Hi everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful day today!

Dizzy,in reply to your question"Are Egyption walking Onions and Pregnant Onions the same?"

No they are not.

The Onion gets real big like the caudex of a Desert Rose where as the Egyption is the same as you had in your yard last year,it makes Onions ontop of the green parts.

here are 2 links you can check out:

Pregnant Onion and Egyptian Onion

I hope this helps!

 No they are to differnt

No they are to differnt types...the Egyptian Walking Onion you would plant in the ground and when the seed head gets to heavey it falls over to the ground and begins another plant ...thus walking along...the preg. onion is grown a a potted plant...and the babies form on the side of the mom onion..

My sisters and I each got a

My sisters and I each got a pregnant onion to plant last year.  I planted mine in an area with some flowers in the edge of my vegetable garden.  The babies didn't end up doing anything but it stayed green thru the winter so we will see how it goes this year.  I think the pregnant onion would need to be outside.  I am a novice to growing pregnant onions, so these are just my thoughts.  Dale

 That is normal for them

That is normal for them to do...just remember you only plant them right on top of the soil...the very bottom is all that is under soil..

THANK You All for sharing your info and experience! I just received 8 babies in a trade and I do so want them to make it!

right now I have them in my seed room under lights.

I had preg. onions for years and years...and have to say ...besides watering when it is dried out it took care of it's self...they are slow growing and do like lots of light...mine always did better outside or in a really sunny window...

I recieved a pregnant onion

I recieved a pregnant onion in trade a couple years ago.  I was told that it would thrive on neglect.  I don't know if this is false or if I'm just not good at properly neglecting my plants!  I've had a bit of trouble with it, but it's still hanging in there.  I've found that it does like a regular soaking.  At first I was watering only sparingly, but it didn't seem to grow much.  Once I started watering regularly, it started growing much faster.  I think it is best grown in a small pot (but please, someone with experience please correct me if I'm wrong!), and then gradually potted into larger pots as the need arises.  Mine is growing in a 12" pot, and I think that is too big for it.  It looks really ragged right now since I've been fighting a scale infestation.  :(  It did just make it's first baby though, so that's exciting!

Good luck with yours, and hopefully someone else will chime in with more advice.  :)
