Equus,
Maybe if you have time you could do an article on which ones are edible, and info on them, it seems Like a lot of the gardeners here dont have this one yet, but I am sure they would all love it....and the info would be wonderful to have on the site !!

It is a tropical vine...I am not sure about in Texas but they are expensive here....there are over 50 varieties of passion vine, and NOT ALL are edible....so make sure you check before eating the fruits.
They are a great vine and really put on a show in the summer !!
BTW they are NOT easy to grow from seed..can take up to 16 months to get germination, so I would recommend getting a plant or trying a cutting.

I have a book called All About Louisiana Wildflowers that has Passiflora incarnata "Maypop" listed as a native. They are sold at nurseries here as natives. The one I got from Walmart is a Passiflora x alatocaerulea. The flowers are purple with a little pink in the stigmas. "It's called Passion Flower referring to the Christian passion. All the parts of the flower are in fives. The combined sepals and petals could represent the apostles. The column of the ovary resembles a cross. The tendrils might be scourges. The 3 stigmas could be nails."
"The fruit of the Maypop is edible fresh or cooked into a juice or jelly." The Maypop variety grows wild here but is kept in control by the catepillers of fritillary butterflies. I am sure they are in TX too. Check the web for images and see all the colors you could get. I am growing the Banana Passionflower from seed. I here they will take years to bloom but I think it's worth the wait.

Pretty
I used to think these flowers looked weird but I am really beginning to like them. I got one on clearance at the end of season last year from Walmart. It was not very well taken care of but I just cut it back and it now has new growth. I also have 3 seedlings of a banana passion flower. I don't know how long to bloom but I am gonna wait for it.
