Mesclun in Containers

I was watching Gardening By the Yard one Saturday and Paul James was talking about container gardening. He took a shallow container and broadcast some mesclun seed on top of the soil and lightly patted the seed and watered. It looked too easy not to try. I bought a pack of mesclun and now I think that is the only lettuce I want to eat now. I am on my second harvest of my first sowing because after you cut your first harvest all you have to do is fertilize and it comes back for a second and maybe a third harvest (probably in cooler areas).
I have planted some every week so now I have 5 containers of mesclun growing. I can't wait til fall so I can do it again. I am stocking up on seeds now. My hubby wont eat it because it looks too "healthy" so he is going to stick to the iceberg. That means more for me and the little "caveman". Yes, he loves lettuce and tomato salads.

I am adenium crazy...but I'm trying to switch to something else
Dorothy, you are right, I have all the light set up over the adnium babies - about 45 of them.........boy, what am I going to do? And it's all because I had no luck in the first round, so I went a little over board in the second.
Speaking of lettuce, I keep looking back at your picture, so summer like!!!!!!Tatyana

I like to mix my mesclun
I like to mix my mesclun mix with other leaf lettuces I grow too......It makes a nice salad of different textures. One of my all time favorites is sort of like a head lettuce with really dark green leaves. It's called Reine des Glaces. It's an old French heirloom lettuce whose name means Queen of the Ices. It's a head lettuce like an iceburg, but with much more flavor and crunch!
If you were to buy Mesclun mix loose in a grocery store like a Whole Foods Market, you'd easily be paying upwards of $7.99 - $9.99 a pound. It sure is nice to be able to grow the stuff for oneself and not have to pay those outrageous prices!!

Baby Butter Heads
Renee's Garden has a Baby Butter Head container variety that I am going to try. She also has some different mesclun mixes that sound yummy. Any veggie that works in a container is inticing to me.

Rabbit Stew and Salad
sounds like a good meal to me. Are they your rabbits or wild ones that visit you from time to time? Have you thought of trying some netting to protect your edibles?

Your picture just made me
Your picture just made me soooooo hungry! It's 10 pm, I'd better go to bed before I go thorugh the fridge looking for a snack!
This lettuce looks so tasty!!!!!!! I can't wait to sow mine. By the way, thanks for the link, very informative site. They say you can start in Feb, but I'm sure it's for warmer climates. I think I'll try anyway, just cover them with clear plastic...I have half a pund bag of seeds, I can spare a few, right?

Sowing indoors-Tatyana
One of the most usefull seed sights for me is Success with Seed You put in the name of the seed and it comes up with sowing info on that seed along with photos. They say you could start it indoors at 68-70 degrees. I know you have the light set up but don't know if you have anymore space. I know you have gone adenium crazy
.
One of my containers is actually the bottom of one of my dome flats that I am not going to use for flowers. I put some holes in it and potting soil and broadcast my seeds. It looks like it will be ready in another week or so. I would give it a try if I were you. I think you can spare some seed.

DorothyD, I assumed by your
DorothyD, I assumed by your post that mesclun is some sort of lettuce and apparently a very tasty one. I just bought a huge packet of Italian lettuce mix, and was wondering.... the temps here still drop below freezing even at daytime sometimes, but if I make a container, the soil will definetely be workable. Can I plant lettuce now? I guess I could also cover it with some sort of plastic f I had to.
Thanks, and BTW, how long after you sowed did you eat your lettuce? Tatyana

Mesclun Lettuce
Tatyana, it took about 28 days to get to 4". It could have been harvested before then and used as "micro greens". I am not sure about dealing with your temps. I have no experience with that kind of cold. Renee Sheperd the seed lady has a great site with lots of info. I am going to try some of the "baby" head lettuces she has. I am going to try to put a link here.
