Well, My husband and I are planning on making a trip to Brazil next year (2009) because he is from Brazil and I have never been there. I am very excited about planning for the trip. Plus, I am very excited about the idea of getting lots of real cool tropical flower/plant seeds. I just wondered if any of you knoew anything about how much I could bring and if there is a process of inspection that I will go through? I guess I could contact the Embassy and see what they say. But, I just wanted to get "real life" expereince if any of you had any to share.

Thanks for links and info. These all sound like good places to start looking at. I have lots of time to get things researched. My husband tells me all the time that the flowers in Brazil are so much nicer and that Americans like "weeds" LOL. But, I think he is a little biased. I just tell him one man's junk is another man's treasure. Laughing

But, I have seen some pretty pictues of his family's yards and would love to incoorporate some into our home. Can't wiat to see them for my self.

Another thing that occurred

Another thing that occurred to me is that many countries use pesticides and insecticides that are banned by the U.S. This applies especially to food crops. I'd make sure that before you bring any living plant into the U.S. that it hasn't been treated with any substance that the US would considered a banned one.

As Dizzy said, I suspect that in some cases, rather than having to go through customs and pay duty taxes or anything else, that you look for vendors who have the proper licenses necessary to ship to the U.S. Then you could ship stuff back to yourself and not have to worry about whether or not something will be confiscated by the TSA or customs.

Another thing to consider is this: since 9/11, the government is very concerned about things that are brought into the US from over seas.....be mindful of what you carry, and as of May of this year, there may be a limit on how much baggage you can take with you without having to pay for the extra bags. I think they plan to limit checked baggage to one bag and carry on to one bag. If you have additional baggage, you'll be charged $25 for the first additional bag, and I think they intend to charge significantly more if you have additional bags, plus there is also the weight requirement to consider.

Don't hand carry anything like that

There are several places to find good info on this and I applaud you for starting now to make sure you do it all correctly and safely. A great US gov site is Know Before You Go  - has all kinds of details about bringing things home from vacation.

One thing I would do, rather than hand carry any kind of seeds on a flight these days, is MAIL  or ship them home to myself from there.  Just that much less trouble to go through, especially as strict as they are about allowing anything "extra" on flights these days. Plus, that also means you only have to study up on the Postal Regulations via US/Brazil. LOL~!

If you are going to bring home plants/tubers, I would do the same thing with those - be aware, according to APHIS they may also need a special nursery certificate to make it past customs at any point, including Postal.     Here is a link to the PERMIT to import small lots of seeds, tubers and plants for growing.

Also, DO make sure you are not importing anything on the Federal Invasive Species List --> WEEDS  !!!
