I've turned a new leaf and gotten a second opinion (my own Wink) and have decided to lose 30 lbs.  Now, I've talked my two sisters into joining me in this fantastic idea and we've agreed to do a weigh-in every Saturday.

I can't wait to get advice and input from all our members.

Thanks for moving the weight-loss support group here so I can participate!

I don't think we have made

I don't think we have made an official weigh-in day, but I tipped the scale this morning at 233.  That's fifteen pounds since we started.

Good Work Randy...COngrats on all the hard work paying off for you

How is everyone doing.  I

How is everyone doing.  I am not losing but then I'm not really gaining either.  It is a strugle now as the meds tend to make weight gain.

I've added another 1/2 mile to my walks,  My puppy enjoys going to the park to play  in the grass and meet other dogs and people.  He makes the walks go fast.  It is fun to watch him enjoy himself.

The weekends seem to be a bit tougher for me.  I take my wife out to breakfast every Saturday.  I have modified my breakfast though and have only half of the hashbrowns they serve and I give one piece of toast to my wife and a strip of bacon.  So she helps me eat part of my breakfast.  Being Monday, I sort of expected to see some weight come back on but I was pleasantly surprised.  I didn't do the treadmill on Saturday or Sunday, but I did some plumbing and electrical work on the house and I am sure I worked harde doing that than I would have on the treadmill.  But this morning I managed to tip the scale at 232.6 so I didn't increase, I actually dropped just a little bit from the previous low.  My wife is starving me, that's what it is.  LOL

we took the boys to the

we took the boys to the park this morning for some exercise.  hubby pulled them in a wagon.  they were harder going down the hill than coming up because he wagaon tried to run over him.

I will probably get plenty of exercise chasing them around.  at least the little one naps.

I managed to do the

I managed to do the treadmill on Tuesday after I got through with my visits, but I only did a mile on it yesterday.  My hip was hurting quite a bit.  I did something that I knew better on Tuesday at the afternoon visit.  There was a man there that I needed to move before I could get another man out.  The fellow wouldn't lift his feet while he was in his wheelchair so it acted much like a brake.  I managed to get him moved by lifting on the handles on the rear of the wheelchair and scooting him sideways.  But he is a pretty big man and I shouldn't be lifting like that anyway.  I should have gotten some help from the staff people.  That's the long way of saying that I didn't get on the treadmill at all today.

Randy do be careful when

Randy do be careful when moving people I know my hubby hurt his back moving his sister when she was down.  Next time get help.  We aren't as young as we once were.

I knew as soon as I did it

I knew as soon as I did it that it was a mistake.  I did take a pain pill this evening.  I don't want to break the habit of that bloomin' treadmill.

hubby is watching the boys

hubby is watching the boys most mornings so I can take my walk with my puppy.  I try to be back in less than an hour.  I've been enjoying the peace of only having the puppy with me.  He makes the walk seem shorter.  I love watching him try to get a bird or a squirll.  But I have to watch what I eat.  We have cookies and things in the house for the boys.  Cameron likes to share like Jamie did.  I think I gained 40 pounds those couple of years when I babysat her.

I haven't baked any cookies

I haven't baked any cookies since December and I don't foresee any anytime soon.  Although Arianna will be here next week for spring vacation and I could very easily change my mind.  I'm baking some biscuits today that will probably be consumed by the family on Sunday.  MF has invited about 20 people to dinner that day.

I saw some girl scouts at

I saw some girl scouts at the market a couple of weeks ago and paid $3.50 for a box of their sugar-free cookies.  It was kind of funny.  They asked what kind I wanted and I didn't really care as I didn't intend to eat any of them anyway.  But I guess when they looked at me they figured I needed sugar-free.  LOL  So I have them on my desk next to me and I have had one and sometimes two in a day.  There are still five left.  You don't really get very many cookies for $3.50 but I would have given them that even if I didn't get any cookies.

Randy I bought some from

Randy I bought some from some girls here in Austin and $50 worth from Jamie.  I gave lots of them away.  The Girl Scouts were sending some to Iraq if you paid and donated the boxes.  I know Jamie sent some of what I paid for to Iraq.  That said I still have 4 boxes of cookies left.  I popped them in the cupboard for when I need to send treats with hubby.  It is easier than baking a bunch and being tempted after smelling them while they cook.  Yes I do have a box of the sugar free ones.  these are chocolate chip but earlier I had some cinnamon swirl that were sugar free from the Austin scouts.  I guess the sugar free is different depending on which bakery the council uses.

Ours has benches where you

Ours has benches where you can sit. It's actually kind of nice because the benches are near the vents. Kids really aren't supposed to go into hot tubs, or so I've heard. It's also apparently not especially great for folks with high blood pressure, but I do it anyway. I find that it really helps with this back and hip pain that I've been suffering from for the past couple of years. They have to put lots of chemicals in ours to keep it safe because so many people use it. I think they have a way to recycle the water out and back in so they aren't using fresh water all the time. I go there to soak because I don't have to pay for the hot water that way, and the water stays hot there.

The pool isn't heated, so although I've actually gone swimming in it when the water is very cold, I'm not fond of it, and sometimes, it's even cold enough to give you leg cramps, and that can be dangerous.....I can't wait until it's warm enough for me to do some hard core swimming again. Because it is so easy on the joints, I don't have a problem doing it, and I'm not cringing because of pain down the pike. I get winded after a while, but that's a good feeling. The one bad thing about swimming in a shared pool is the fact again, that they have to use chemicals to keep it safe. It really does a number on the skin -- drying it out.

Our kids here are not that

Our kids here are not that young anymore.  The youngest is 13.  The other two are 17 and 19.  We have seats in our hot tub also and I think they are close to the jets, but I haven't been in there for about 7 years.

I've been telling my

I've been telling my landlord (sil) that we need a hot tub but he is too cheap to put one in for us.  Every year I post a Santa list to him with the hot tub on it but he laughs at me.

He is really a sweet guy.  hey have paid for plane tickets for the whole family to come to England for visits.  My middle daughter goes on the 14th.  I go after the boys on the 11th.  That way she has a day of rest before 17 hours of flight time.  They are going to Paris first.  The 3 granddaughters are so thrilled about the trip.  The two oldest are working on french to get them by on the trip.  the little one is excited to be going to the effiel tower.

They are all using their travels for Girl Scout patches. They are going to the Girl Scout Girl Guide Hut in Paris.  They think this could be fun.

I 'm so jealous, Lynpenny!

I 'm so jealous, Lynpenny! I love Paris with all my heart! My grandfather lived there for many years!

You should be prepared for a very very very low dollar to Euro exchange rate. I don't know whether you all planned to do any shopping over there, but if you did, I'd warn the kids ahead of time that you don't get a hell of a lot for your dollar there right now.

There are all sorts of gorgeous gardens to see, and if the weather isn't too bad, walking can be really fun! Just be sure you've got really great walking shoes and a good map of Paris.

The place where my grandfather lived was an apartment, but Parisian apartments are anything but your run of the mill places. They are quite large and spaces. He even had an area in his where he could paint, and it didn't interfere with the living spaces of the apartment either. Lots of apartments in Paris proper look like they are nearly flush with the street. There will be a huge entry door -- and you may think that's the door to the building. It's not -- well, not exactly. It's a door that goes into a gorgeous courtyard area, and there are entrances to the apartments all around that courtyard. That means in addition to having some windows that face the street, you also have a view of a courtyard.

There's loads of good eating there, too.....My mom was just there last April with my 16 year old niece. There was a place we used to adore when I was a child...it was also one of my father's places. It was called Fauchon on the Place de la Madelaine. My mother says it's changed a lot, and whereas it used to be more like a regular bakery, now things are prepackaged.

If you like to look at beautiful architecture, you can take in some great sites and get some great exercise walking while you are at it!

I better be careful or I might turn green with envy!

I heard from my daughter

I heard from my daughter today and she and at least 2 of the 5 kids have the flu.  At least they have a week to recover before the trip.  I just hope the boys don't have it when I pick them up.

I had to walk at IKEA today as it was raining to hard and a little too cool for me to walk outside.  But at least I found a place to walk.

I hate to say this but I've gained 3 pounds this last week.  I know start back at paying more attention to what I'm eating.  Also a new med I'm on says it can cause weight gain.  Just what I wanted to know.  I'll just have to work a little harder.

Has anyone used the steam

Has anyone used the steam bags from ziplock.  I put some zuchinn in and steamed it last night and it was really good.  I like these bags.  This could give me a easy quick way to steam veggies.  You can't get much healthier than steamed veggies.

Ditto to the

Ditto to the congratulations, Randy! I got on the scale today for the first time in a while. To my delight, I'd lost just over 4 pounds. I have been paying particular attention to what I've been eating. I was doing it before my hubby and I went to a pre-diabetes education class, but now I'm being more careful. I've got my hubby taking small steps, but that's a real battle. I don't eat any rice (unless it's brown or wild rice,) pasta -- unless it's extra high fiber pasta, potatoes or other starches. That means that lots of beans are off limits, too. That means that the lion's share of my diet consists of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean meat, fish or poultry. I also try to use dairy products like yogurt. I have osteoporosis and have been wrestling with some horrible lower back and hip pain for over two years, and no one can figure out what the problem was. The most recent doctor wanted to put me on a stupid drug that had a lot of side effects: fluid retention in the hands and feet (which I've had before from drugs) and since I have high blood pressure, it struck me as outrageously stupid. Another side effect was weight gain.....Some guy wants to give me a drug with these side effects when I'm having trouble with joints and back pain.....Needless to say, I haven't seen the guy again! I'm proud of my accomplishment though. I can't wait until I can get back to swimming laps. When the weather is warm, I swim laps without fail. My ideal is 200+, but I never do less than 50. It's a great way to get a good workout in hot weather and still keep cool, and swimming is super easy on those joints.

I could use the pool in Newberg, but it would cost me $3.50 every time I use it.  I don't like the treadmill, but it's already paid for and it sure is handy.

We have a hot tub on the back porch.  I even got in it once, but it doesn't have seat belts and I have a tendency to float away.  Daivid and Fiona use it quite a bit though.  And of course the grandkids use it a lot in the summer with reduced heat settings.

I had a doctor appointment

I had a doctor appointment this morning.  My blood sugar was higher than I thought it should be, but the doctor seemed to be happy with it.  He did give me a test kit so I can check my own blood a couple of times a week.  He was aslo pleased that I had lost 12 pounds since the last time I was in there.  I still have a long way to go though.  My weight at the doctor's office was 236.  On January 31 it was 248.

I had a meeting this morning and didn't go for my walk till afternoon.  I felt better after I got it in.  It was really windy again today but I put on my Ipod to keep the wind from making my ears hurt.

I didn't do my treadmill

I didn't do my treadmill time yesterday.  It was the first day I have missed since about the first weekend of February.  I did till my garden area yesterday though and I am sure I got much more of a workout that the treadmill would have given me.  I did blow my diet today also as there was a seniors potluck after church this morning.  Then I went out to eat with the family this evening.  But tomorrow I will get back on track.  I'm going to make some boysenberry jam tomorrow too.  I have a couple of containers of frozen crushed boysenberries I need to use up.  The jam tomorrow will be sugar-free which does please my wife considerably.  Boysenberries are her favorite.

Stress . . . less

I have found drinking lots of water really does help.  Most days I try to drink eight to twelve glasses of water and eat a little healthier than the day before.

What seems to affect me negatively is stress and long hours (or, is this just my excuse for gaining a half pound this past week Undecided).  Anyway, I'm back on track and promise to do better this week --no ice cream and cake and fewer hours on the computer --now that our new site is 75% launched I plan to relax more, eat a little less and take walks now and then.

Maybe it's a little rhetorical, to say, "that sounds pretty sensible to me". Wink

P.S. I'll do my next weigh-in on Saturday.

He sounds like me witht he foods,ma willing to Try the change so will have to get used to brown rice, whole grains, no Fatty foods-(Does French Fries count??)-I just don't know If I can give up Fried Chicken though-have to talk to Dr too,.!!!

Hey Rose yu can't give up

Hey Rose yu can't give up everything.  Start by cutting back slowly.  You just try to make things a little healthier.  I choose brown rice over white. I use diet sodas instead of reg.  I use light mayo, I use light sour cream, light or no dressing on my salads, I look for leaner meats, I use splenda instead of sugar.  It takes a while.  My hubby won't eat alot of fish so we have salmon patties (he likes them), tuna salad or fish sticks.  I know we aren't supposed to have the breading but it is a trade off for me.  He will at least eat some fish that way.  I threw the salt away and I use spices now.  It takes time and help from friends but it can be done.  Just stay in there and keep trying.

Brown Rice

Now I have to admit I'm not a brown rice fan but if I cook it in chicken broth I can stand it :-) TTFN, Dora/Garden Goddess
skbeal's picture

Garden Goddess, I think

Garden Goddess, I think cooking brown rice in chicken broth is a great way to cook it......It gives it a bit more flavor. Most brown rice (unless it's the quick cooking kind) takes about 45 minutes to cook.

Another really tasty grain that's really healthy is Farro. It's an ancient Mediterranean grain that's sort of like barley. It's cooked with chicken broth and vegetables, and then you can add meat and tomatoes. It's one of those hearty winter one dish meal type of things.

I walked for an hour this

I walked for an hour this morning.  I took the puppy so it was an entertaining walk.  He likes to run and try to get the birds and squirrels at the park.  He never even comes close but I noticed that he doesn't chase the ducks.  Of course they are bigger than he is.

I'm still trying to eat healthy.  We are having hamburgers grilled for supper tonight.  We will also have a salad and some grilled squash.

We went out to a rib house on Fri night and I got the grilled veggie plate and my dil gave me one rib to eat.  It was heaven but enough for me.  The veggies were really good.  I was the only one who didn't order desert.  I felt good that I didn't go off the deep end with that meal.  It is sometimes hard to eat right but then we should all eat something good once in  a while.  That way we don't feel deprived and really eat bad.

Like I tell the kids.  If you replace mayo with light, cheese with the 2% cheese, diet sodas, drink lots of water and cut back on your portions you are making a begining.

Just a quick thought.  Are

Just a quick thought.  Are we going to plan some scheduled chats?

There has been some talk

There has been some talk about that, Lyn, but nothing set down in concrete yet.  I know we can't find a time that will be convenient for everyone, but we need to try.  At this time of day, I see there are only a couple of die-hards on board with me, but at least one of them is in the eastern time zone.  I can generally be down here on the computer by 7:00 PM but that's 10:00 PM fopr the easterners.

Dale where white rice cooks

Dale where white rice cooks in 20 minutes it takes 45 to cook brown.  I just put it in a pan with a lid with the water and cook it slowly for 45 min.  My problem is getting it ready so I sometimes cook it ahead of time and just put it in a zip lock in the fridge till I want to use it.

Dale, I could do a good job

Dale, I could do a good job on cooking brown rice when I had an automatic cooker.  If it had been made out of stainless steel, I would still have it.  But you can't leave food particles (wet) in aluminum dishes because the acid will put pinholes in the aluminum.  I should look into getting another one though because that think would cook rice perfectly every time.  I bought that cooker at a Japanese market in Seattle about 20 years ago and that market now has a branch just over the mountain from me in Beaverton.  I'm going over the mountain tomorrow morning so if I can remember, I'll head over to that market and see what they have.  I cooked some brown rice just recently and I wasn't watching close enough.  I cooked all the water out of it and it started to get crunchy again.  Not my best effort, you know.

[img_assist|nid=1484|title=Gardening|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=165|height=200] Hi rose...also nto only the changes to the diet that all have suggested...you could do a bit of exercise in your chair...

I went though some training with my mom when she was not able to do much in her last year...you could do simple leg lifts while sitting...sit in a chair with a good straight back and do not bend your knee and lift one leg at a time ever so slowly...only go as high as is comfortable..then hold a count of 2 and lower....do right leg then left..start off with maybe 4 or 5 each leg...once you have built up this ...then you can extend your legs and hold count of 5 and lower..have a few more if oyu are interested...

I am in real hot water

I am in real hot water y'all. Tomorrow morning, I'm accompanying my darling hubby to the VA Hospital to consult with a dietician. Once again, his triglycerides are so high that they are worried about pre-diabetes. The trouble is, he's a man for whom white bread, white rice, noodles, sugar cereal, potatoes and all that awful unhealthful stuff has been standard dietary fare. He hates fish, doesn't like chicken much (so I use buffalo, ground turkey or anything else I can think of -- pork is a good lean meat,) but he refuses to eat vegetables or fruit. He won't eat brown rice or sweet potatoes. He says he's too old to change. The reality is that if he wants to continue to eat the way he does, and I am in that pre-diabetic area of concern as well (without the cholesterol problems,) we aren't going to be able to afford two separate diets. How do you get someone who has always eaten the most unhealthy food known to humanity to consider trying healthy stuff? I did do some walking while I was in Chicago -- and ironically, despite the fact that the sidewalks and alleys were sheets of solid ice, I walked around there more than I typically do here. Does house work count as working out?

i count housework when I do

i count housework when I do the floors or something I don't normally do in a day.  I also count the gardening.  It is the best exercise I can do.

My hubby was like that when we first found out we were diabetic.  He has slowly come around.  I also slowlly stopped cooking things.  At first he ate them when we went out but now he is eating a little better when we go out.  His doctor told him last week that he was cured of diabetese.  I made a fuss and the doctor changed it to say he was under control.  That one statement could give him the freedom to start eating white bread potatoes, ice cream candy and all the stuff he has stopped eating and he won't know when to stop.  Oh yeah he has lost 50 pounds.
