Tell us all about your favorite houseplants ~
What plant? What kind of soil mix do you use? How much light do they get? How often do you water? Have you come up with a new way to make sure you don't overwater?

Shooting Star Hoya
Tatyana, the shooting star you are recalling from around Montana would probably be - MIDLAND SHOOTING STAR (Dodecatheon meadia), also called Big Chief. I should have seeds for this coming.
SusyFlores' plant is Shooting Star Hoya - Hoya multiflora . Susy, you might try looking it up by that name and see what the "experts" say about propagating it.
Two different plants, sharing a common name. There is alot of that, especially when using the common names we've been handed down.

SHOOTING STAR
Is a long story. A friend. Ana ( a coworker) always talked about the pink and the white shooting star her friend had. No one at work even heard about this plant or saw it before. This person is very old and this plant had been in her family from about five generations back. Because of her advanced age and health, she could not take care of her plants any longer so she gave them to my coworker Ana. Ana gave me a small rooted white, she kept one and gave the others away. Hers died but mine grew and since then (about two years ago) it has been flowering. So really we don't know where this plant originally came from.
The leaves look like a tropical plant and mine is about 3ft. high. I keep a piece of carpet under the plant because the flowers drip this clear liguid like water, very interesting plant.
As soon as I get a way to upload my pictures I will post pictures. You are going to like it!
my house plants
Hello
I have many house plants, but, the one I enjoy the most is WHITE SHOOTING STAR ,
I keep this plant in my kitchen window facing south. I water this plant once a week but I have this plant in its regular pot and this pot in a big container. the reaon is that requires alot of water, so when I water this plant on saturdays I water them until this container fills of water.
I have never fertilize it.
I like this plant very much because it flowers all year long some times more flowers than other but i always have flowers.
I dont know how to propagate it, I have not been succesful with seeds at all, I have tried many times. now I cut few pieces and put few in soil and few in water and see what happens, I hope it works, I would love to be able to trade them in the future.
I love my shooting star plant.
orchids
my husband have orchids plants in our bedroom, by the windows, facing south and with the shade semi open, so the orchids just get diffused light.
they are blooming right now. he has purple, yellow, whie, pink, green and purple with white spots flowers..a beauty.
we usuaslly have orchids in bloom from february to may.
he water them once a week and fertilize them once a month.
he changes the pot or tansplants them when the roots are coming out from the bottom and the top of the pot, not before.
is very refreshing when i wake up in the morning and see all this pretty flowers.
they are easy to grow and the flowers last a long time.
Here are some of my
Here are some of my favorites...
Japanese Hoya -my G'mother rooted me a basket of these when she pruned hers (it had grown 'into' the curtains on her porch!). I had always admired hers and thought the 'plastic looking' flowers were really cool. I winter it in a sunny window and let it outside in Summer. I keep rooted cuttings at all times in case something happens to the original, so I'll always have the Hoya that G'mother gave me..
Norfolk Island Pine - My boys and I have 6 altogether...there's the 'big fella' that I bought about 2 years ago as a potted Christmas Tree -it was only about 8" tall and is now about 3' tall. The other 5 we purchased this year after Christmas. I love indoor trees and now we have one (at least) for every room in the house. I water them when the soil is dry on top and give them acid fertilizer about once a month.
Baobab Tree- These I started from seed. Baobabs can grow SERIOUSLY HUGE and are long-lived. There is one (I think in Australia) that is used as a pub /bar. One has even been recorded as being around when Jesus walked on the Earth! I've got 2 of them: One is just over a year old, about 7" tall and waiting to sprout new leaves (my 3 year old stripped them off last Fall!); the other one is a new seedling less than a month old (it still has its leaves, my young 'un doesn't break plants anymore, whew!).Its still in the indoor greenhouse. I don't plan on letting my Baobabs get so huge- I plan to Bonsai one, but I would like to let the other become a nice large houseplant (Talk about 'lack of space' lol) before stunting its roots.
All of the above plants are currently in potting soil, but this Spring I will transplant most of them and mix in a bit of Vermiculite and clay with the soil (Its what I used for my hydroponics seedlings). I've also recently switched from Miracle Grow to an 'Organic' fertilizer for all of my plants (I'll be fertilizing 'organically' outdoors this Spring), I'm anxious to see the results...
