Since "Tropicals" is my favorite forum, thought I would get a hibiscus thread rolling.

Just recently I cut back my potted hibiscus (several) and would you believe I have baby leaves already showing on their stems?  That is remarkable.

 Others?

P. S.  I was going to show a pic but need to read more on how to do it. :(

Mary, don't give up on your

Mary, don't give up on your hibiscus.  Many of them are VERY slow to come back after a frost.  You may not see any life from it till June.  If you wait that long and it's well into summer and it still has no leaves, then I think it's safe to assume it's dead.  It seems like many of the tropical varities that aren't supposed to take any frost will actually come back after a light freeze.  There's a house down the street from me that has a beautiful variegated tropical hibiscus.  It dies back every winter and they cut it down to the ground, but it comes back agian every year.

I have a Bloody Mary

I have a Bloody Mary tropical hibiscus.  I bought it late last summer and kept in outside in a pot all winter.  I wasn't sure it would be hardy here, but I wanted to test it, and sure enough it survived!  The only protection I gave it was to pull it under the porch for the few weeks of really cold weather we had.....then I just kinda forgot about it.  It looks a little ragged now since it started losing leaves before I put it under the porch.  But it's starting to sprout new leaves.  I'm wondering if I should cut it back or if the leaves will fill in on their own?  I did take a cutting of it in the fall and rooted it indoors.  I have that one growing on my windowsil in a small pot, and it has a bud on it!  I am quickly running out of space for indoor plants, but it would be nice to keep on indoors flowering all year.

Your bloody mary hibiscus

Had to google your bloody mary hibiscus since I had not  heard of that.  Very pretty, almost reminds me of a bearded iris bloom.  I would cut it back.  I've done that with mine and new leaves are everywhere.  We are both in zone 9 too!

Hibiscus leaves sprouting up

Frilly, this is a lovely photo of your hibiscus.....but it's not within the size range that Al has specified.  Did you upload this from a site where you have your photos stored, such as Photobucket?  We've had a couple of other very large ones, and they had to be deleted.  Please try to remove this post, and create another one with your photo resized to 35 KB or less.   Thank you...

hi maw

Hi maw,

Thanks to a buddy here, I was able to learn about resizing in Microsoft Paint.  I did a test upload in Test thread and it works fine.  I'll just skip this one to resize since it is quite a fete to resize in Paint.

kinds of hibiscus

Hi Treva, thanks!  Well, I've got 2 potted hibiscus.  The hibiscus in the front courtyard, potted, is unknown name.  Blooms wonderful pink color.  It's at least 8 years old.  The potted hibiscus in the back courtyard also blooms pink but different hibiscus than in the front. That one is about 4 or 5 years old.  The bark is entwined and really cool!  Thanks for asking.  Wish I knew their names.Cry

Hi Taty,

Your are welcome.  That is cool about your hibiscus seedlings.  You must have plenty of patience right?Smile  I used to have a white hib with maroon center.  It was very pretty but bit the dust.  I don't remember seeing white hibiscus.  May be fairly rare?

Yes, show us pics when you can.
