Prefers sun, but does just

Prefers sun, but does just as well in partial sun.

Not fussy as to soil as long as it drains well and has some orgainic matter worked in.

I noticed today that they are up a few inches with arching flower buds forming.

They grow 12" -14" high.

They  start growing in early April and disappear after blooming, leaving just the flower stalk with one or two seed cases to develop and ripen.

They do not require dividing though you might like to dig them  up every couple of years, so you can ammend the soil.  Then replant at the same depth.

From seed they take 3-4 yrs to develop from seedling to flowering size bulb.

Wow! Love the Guinea Hen Fritillary!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron, thanks for posting this Fritillary!  It's so unusual!  The color is awesome, besides the fact it naturalizes.  Could you possibly post more info about  it such as shade/sun; damp/wet/dry; height; easy or difficult to grow; etc, etc.  Thanks,  maw

I'm trying to create a

I'm trying to create a colony of them so I'm letting them go to seed and have been sowing them.  They are cool spring bloomer and pretty much disappear by the end of June with just the seed cases left to ripen!  Once they open I scatter the seeds around the area I have them growing.

Sorry I cannot send you bulbs across the US border.  Though I might be able to sneak some seeds across through the mail in a plain white envelop.  Instead of SASE we could work out  some type of seed trade!!

Forgot aboot that!

Drat - would love to try some seeds though! Bubble envelopes do just fine going to/from Canada too, have done seeds trades with Northern neighbors before. Customs just wants anything sent to have the actual latin name as well as the common name on the packet.

Ron, let me know if you really would like to trade for any of my seeds.

Ron that coloring looks just

Ron that coloring looks just like a Guinea Hen.  We raised some Guineas one time, had to get rid of them.   They make too much fuss for me.  Dale
