I am looking for a flowering vine that can take light shade from my sweetgum tree.  Any suggestions?

What about?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Silver lace vine if you can keep it from getting invasive.
  • Morning glories
  • Periwinkle vinca vines
  • Wisteria vine
  • Trumpet vine -- if it's pruned a lot -- otherwise it will be invasive.
  • Climbing hydrangea vine (known as one of the few flowering vines that can tolerate shade.)

How about these

How about these vines~ Honeysuckle-(Lonicera) Great for hummingbirds. Trumpet vine-(Distictus buccinatoria) flowers best in full sun but will bloom in partial shade. It is hardy to 24 degrees F. Virgin's Bower-(Clematis paniculata) is very hardy climber that will reach 30 feet. Dutchman's Pipe-(Aristolochia littoralis)is evergreen and hardy to 25 degrees F and root hardy to below 20 degrees F. 'Mme. Galen' Trumpet Creeper-(Campsis x tagliabuana) has bright orange flowers and is hardy to below 0°F.

When gardeners garden, it is not just plants that grow,
but the gardeners themselves.

Climbing hydrangeas do well

Climbing hydrangeas do well in shade.  In fact, growing up a tree is probably the best place for them.

Vines for light shade?

How about clematis? With over 500 varieties to choose from, there's bound to be a couple you like.

Crossvine might work for you too.

Clematis for shade?

I have all my clematis in sun.  Just the roots need shade or "cool". Let me check my clematis site.
