We had a bird hit the window

We had a bird hit the window today.  It was knocked senseless for awhile.  Fiona saw it so she picked it up and wrapped it in a towel and held it close to her for awhile.  After about 5 minutes it stirred a little and she had David get her something with water in it.  She dropped a drop on the bird's beak and the bird seemed to suck it in or at least opened the beak slightly and allowed it to seep in.  She did several drops that way and then uncovered the little bird.  The bird flew about three feet away and sat there for several minutes and then flew away.  It was a golden-crowned sparrow.  Sometimes they hit hard enough to kill them, but we have saved several of them that way.

I have no pictures of the

I have no pictures of the birds here but we have had a blue jay that hangs around, along with a cardinal, doves, finches, and of course gackles.

We don't have grackles out

We don't have grackles out here, but I heard about them through my father-in-law when he was alive. I remember one bird though from down Texas way and it was called a scissortail.

Thank you Randy...This is a

Thank you Randy...This is a rose-breasted grosbeak.. They only stop by for a while in early May here...His song is cherry and lyrical, almost like a March.Rose-breasted GrosbeakRose-breasted Grosbeak

We don't get the rose-breasted grosbeak here in western Oregon, but we do get the black-headed grosbeak and the evening grosbeak. I never thought of it before, but I wonder how the evening grosbeak got its name.

I don't much care for wild turkey Susan...I have a fried who raises them and I get Thanksgiving turkey from him.....I don't hunt anymore at all..don't kill much of anything but a bug now and then.. I used to hunt all the time..rabbit, squirrel, coons, dove, quail.
Always had wild life to eat...the coon hunting...I did all this with my dad up until he passed.. I haven't hunted since then..
Heck I don't even bother all the snakes in my gardens..Their harmless and I'm not afraid of them...Joy is playing in the dirt..

I like your attitude, PL. I

I like your attitude, PL. I don't hunt anymore either but I don't have a problem with those that do. I just rather look at the animals instead of killing them, with the xception of skunks, by the way. They get into our chicken house and kill the chickens.

Peggy, guess you wn't have

Peggy, guess you wn't have to go far for Thanksgiving dinner. We have gazillions of mockingbirds here since it's the Texas state bird. They sing up a storm. They can actually sing 35 notes and mimic the calls of countless birds. We also have house, purple and gold finches here, warblers, wrens, tanagers, all sorts of birds. Then there are the nuisance ones like grackles, crows and starlings, all of which I would prefer not to see....They can be so noisey and the noise isn't pleasant like the mockingbirds. My favorites of all, of course are hummingbirds. I keep trying to create a paradise for them so that they will hang out for as long as possible. This year, I think I kept them around for about a month longer than last year. It wasn't JUST me, though. The weather made it desireable for them to stay.

I didn't realize the first

I didn't realize the first year or so that the goldfinches hung around all year. We get another bird that likes the thistle seeds though and I could tell they were not the pine siskins that I expected. It was then that I realized that it was our goldfinches with their winter clothes on.

VERY NICE PEGGY,

VERY NICE PEGGY,

The finches stay around here

The finches stay around here all winter althought they do lose their colors.
They were truely a joy watching playing in the newly fallen snow last winter.
Ok I was going to add another pic but I seem to not be able to do that...

Very nice photo -- am I

Very nice photo -- am I noticing three birds on one side, tipping it in the opposite direction? That's rather cute. I see that the one on the right is actually on a branch -- so he/she isn't helping to even it out.

Thanks for sharing -- I love our birds, too. Our American Gold Finch are already turning their winter color, here.

That's a male on the right

That's a male on the right side, Theresa. The males are brighter in their summer plumage than the females and wear a black cap. I'm not sure I can tell them apart in winter plumage.

Thanks Randy -- I'm too

Thanks Randy -- I'm too nearsighted to be able to tell the detail in these smaller photos. I've had some minor visual issues the past couple years -- and sometimes I can't tell a floater from something on the screen:)

(aging eyes, they tell me, and if that is not enough, one recent asthma med says it can cause blurring -- I see the eye Dr. Wednesday!)
