Experimenting with Hydroponics Journal
Hi ya'll,
Well it looks like my previous posts were lost during the move to this new site, but hey we got a hydroponics forum!!!! Thank you to the forum managers, etc !!!!
Fortunately I'd just gotten started with this. Here's a recap so far of my 'hydroponics on the kitchen counter' ( its actually on the bar) ......
I actually made two hydro reserviors (I had too many seed varieties I wanted to grow !) The main reservior is made from a 16qt plastic tote. The 2nd reservior is made from a Jiffy starter 'greenhouse'. I cut holes in the lids to hold plastic cups which have holes in the sides 1" from the bottom. I have a 60gmp aquarium pump with an airline and airstone going into each reservior. There's a plant grow light about 12" above the reserviors. For growing medium, I used a 3 part vermiculite/1 part ground clay mixture ( I couldn't find pelleted clay anywhere!). It seemed only right to use organic fertilizers, which I ordered online. I purchased everything new with the exception of the 2nd reservior container. The total startup cost -including shipping for the fertilizers- was $78.
2/18/08- I chose and planted the following seeds, adding just enough water in the cups to moisten the grow media:
Reservior #1:
Butterfly Vine
Butterfly Weed
Cassandra
Desert Willow
Cypress Vine
Hibiscus (Dbl. Pink)
Texas Red Star Hibiscus
Queen Anne's Lace Vine
Reservior #2:
Blackberry Lillies
Desert Rose
Giant Sequoia (Calif. Redwood)
King Palm
Kiwi
Nightblooming Jasmine
Olive (common)
Siberian Iris
Tree Fern
2/22/08- Have 3 Cypress Vine sprouts!!
2/23/08- Organic fertilizers finally arrived in the mail!!!! Yippee! I distilled water, mixed in a 3-20-20 fertilizer, poured the nutrients into the reserviors and turned on the air pump- finally, the ball is rolling!
2/25/08 (today)- We now have 4 Cypress Vines, averaging 3 1/2-4" tall and a Desert Willow at appx. 1" tall !
...So far this 'gardening without dirt' thing is pretty exciting. I took photos of the setup, I'll try to get them uploaded tomorrow.

You know when you first
You know when you first started talking about this system on the old sute, you insired me to go out and buy an air pum, piping and air stone. I did not have a system per say, but I did place some seeds in a tall cup with lots of water, and ran that air pump 24/7 for about 10 days. As soon as my seeds germinated, I turned it off and planted the seed in regular potting soil.
I had 3 out of 3 moonflower seeds, 2 out of 4 hibiscus seeds, I gave up on passiflora, datura and brug seeds, just planted them in the soil after 10 days with the pump.
I also had success with cypress papyrus seeds. I tried a coffee filter and baggie method before, it didn't work. I had seeds with the air pump for 10 days, and then 5 days later in a baggie ~ I had lots of them germintate. Cypress seeds very tine, skbeal had no luck with them before ~ and now looks like the pump did the trick :)
I'm thinking about making a system, but it depends on how grumpy my DH gets :) I have too much stuff growing and NO garden space

Wow, great results!
Did you just have the seeds in water without any medium? It seems like the bubbles could injure the sprouts...... looks like all you need is a reservoir container, some growing media and fertilizer to have a complete system.
My Cypress Vine seeds were the first to show. The Hibiscus still haven't sprouted, but the seeds could have been old when I got them.
I know what you mean about little garden space. our house is full of plants and seedlings. I still start some seeds using the coffee filter in a baggie method. I hang the baggies on the windows with suction cups to save space. When Spring arrives, I place most of my houseplants outdoors. Of course that always gives me room to grow more and by Fall I'll have even less overwintering space...LOL
I still have many seeds I want to sprout and would like to build another reservoir, but I don't know where to put it. .....Mmm...there's a spot on the bathroom counter....or I could put up a shelf....or maybe in a closet... all we need is a nearby electric plug and a grow light......

Great idea ~ an article with photos!

Tatyana, I have decided to
Tatyana, I have decided to post the instructions as an article. Once I get photos I should be posting it soon.
Are you wanting to make a system and experiment too?!? It would be awesome to have someone else experimenting with me. Since you have alot of the items needed you could probably make one even cheaper than I did. It would be so cool learning together..
Let me know if you decide to build a system.

'How to Make a Hydro Reservoir' step by step instructions?
Hi ya'll,
Due to the amount of people who have shown interest in the Hydroponics Journal, I'm thinking of posting a step-by-step instructional tidbit on how to make a resevoir setup based on my online research and the system I made. I've already got the information typed up, I just need to add photos....
I originally thought to post it as a new thread under the Hydroponics forum, but I'm wondering if it would be better to post it as an article instead.
Do ya'll think this is a good idea, and if so, how should I post it????
Thanks,

Chell, I think the article
Chell, I think the article is definitely the way to go! I write all of mine in Word and then must copy and paste them into the box here...It works just fine. I personally would love to see you turn this experiment into an article! I'm loving reading your entries!

Susan, thanks for the input.
I looked at the Add Article box and it looks the same as posting a reply so there shouldn't be any problem posting the photos into it. I figured copy & paste would be the best bet.
Once I get some photos together I'll give it a try.
Wow, my first online journal and soon my first online article. You guys may turn me into a writer yet!
I'm thrilled so many of you are into the hydro forum. I'm having so much fun with the experiment. I can't wait until all of the hydro pots have sprouted seedlings. Let's cross our fingers!!!
Thanks always,

Re: Chell...would it be
Hi flwrs,
Due to the size limit (35kb) on uploaded photos, I can't put a larger image on the site. I try to send a pm with larger photos...
Thanks for your interest and support!

Re: Do you have some kind of lighting
Hi Susan,
Yes, I have a 22" grow light hanging about 12" above.
For now I'm starting seeds for transplanting, I may build a growing setup from pvc pipe later - I haven't decided yet where it will go if I do. Alot depends on success with the initial reserviors.
I'm already itching to make a couple more reserviors to start more seeds but space is limited. Hubby has banned me from having parrots anymore until we have a house where we can build an outdoor aviary, but I don't think he'll say much about my gardening as long as the plant lights don't start causing a glare on the tv screen! Thank goodness plants don't squawk !

Hydro photos at last!!!
Okay folks,
I think I've finally got the hang of uploading photos here- many thanks to Country gal for her tip ( my new best friend !)
Here's a pic of the hydro setup...
and of our Cypress Vine babies (photo taken 2/25/08):
The setup is as simple as it looks.
The cool part is this year my husband can't laugh at me for buying 'dirt' !!!
Now that I can upload photos, I'll add more as sprouts/ growth develops.
Thanks so much for all of your group support !!!!!!

RE: I would love to hear..
Flwrs,
I do intend to keep the journal going on this forum at least for this season, maybe even continuously as long as the experiment progresses. My intention is to show folks that if I can operate a small inexpensive hydro setup- anyone can, and we can all learn together in the process. It would be great to see others inclined to start their own small setups and experiment along. Then we could even trade hydro-grown houseplants, etc. year-round too!
Its great to know that I have another supporter with this project. I'll be adding photos as soon as I get the hang of 'uploading' (yet, another experiment).
Thanks bunches.

Hydroponic culture has
Hydroponic culture has had my interest for while. I've just never taken the time to experiment with it. Thanks so much for sharing your journal...great details, too! I'm very anxious to follow your experience with it!
