DEB IT TOOK ME 4 DAYS TO SPROUT THE FIRST ONE,I JUST KEPT IT WARM AND MOIST,TEMP ARRANGING FROM 70-75
I DIDNT HAVE A HEAT MATT SO I TOOK A PANCAKE GRIDDLE
AND TESTED THE TEMP AND ALL AND GOT IT AS LOW AS I COULD AND USE A TEMPERTOR,TO CHECK THE HEAT AND THEN I TOOK A SMALL RACK AND PLACE ON THE GRIDDLE,AND THEN A PAN LINED WITH ALUMIUNE FOIL TO KEEP THE HEAT THE SAME ALL OVER THEN I PLACE THE POTS OF SOIL AND SEEDS AND WATERED FROM THE BOTTOM WITH WARM WATER,AND THEN SPRAYED THE TOP OF POT AND THEN COVER THEM WITH A CLEAR PLASTIC LEAVING SOEM AIRHOLES THEN I JUST KEPT THE SOIL DAMP EVRY DAY ARE SO I WOULD WATER THE BOTTOM AGAIN.AND THATS IT.

Jo, that's a pretty ingenius solution you figured out there, girl! Did you have plant lights or did you just use garden variety florescent lights? Did you soak the seeds for 4 hours?

Hello, I'll join in too! I just soaked my seeds yesterday, happened to be for 6 hours since I got carried away with shoping. Anyway, I noticed, when I soaked them, one or two floated and all others swelled nicely. I planted them all anyway, just arking which one is which. Today is day one, nothing yet. And this is a pic of my set up (more details in best practices thread).
I'll keep you updated on sprouting. Tatyana

I am hoping to see more soon!
Super Satisfaction 1-24-08
I also have from Dizzy 2 little Obessum sprouts with 2 leaves each that I planted on 1-12-08
Obessum (Dizzy) 1-24-08
And Finally I have a cutting that I received from Smith (not sure of name I need to check with her?).
Smitha's 1-24-08
OK... so this is where I am and several times each day I check to see if there are anymore little babies....so far none?
God Bless You All

The Lucky Stars I planted on 2/19....I have six babies as of this afternoon...
The Super Satisfactory, Star of Hope, & Obesum that i planted 2/22 haven't germinated yet....
I am so enjoying watching my babies...Peggy
I did the root trimming
but not the hairy guys, I trimmed the main root, leaving the side shoots....may be I did it backwards. I performed this "surgery" about 3 weeks ago, and then I a week later, I pinched off the main part of the caudex down to 1 set of leaves (from 4 sets) to promote branching. I'll post a picture in the next few days - it worked!
All the seedlings now have 2 branches coming out from the main stem. It took awhile for the seedling to recover form the shock, but they did just fine. Tatyana

My Adenium Babies.
Hey Adenium/Desert Rose Lovers!
Where have you all gone?
My 1st Adenium babies are doing really good! They all have nice fat caudexs' and 8 leaves each. They are still in the 2 1/2 inch peat pots.I water them every other day with a spray bottle,I have 2 one with MG and the other is plain rain water.I intend on leaving them in the 2 1/2 pots until rootbound. Then they will go t a 3 12 inch peatpot for a whle longer.
My 2nd Round Adeniums have cute little caudex now. They are starting to plump up.They all have at least 5 or 6 leaves now. They are in 2 1/2 inch peat pots.
Remember to get a fat caudex, you need to lift the plant higher each time you repot them.
Hi Everyone!
I'm so glad that everyones "Babies" are doing so well.
Desert Roses are the best plants for Bonsai!
What you do to have a very unusual caudex is:
Mine are still in the 2 1/2 peat pots and doing wonderfull!
Not rootbound yet but getting close!
Round 2 Desert Rose experiment
I know I am running behind but I started my Desert Rose seeds on Saturday 3/8/08. I soaked them overnight and only 1 sank. I started 5 Pink, 5 Dance of the Butterfly, 5 Star of Red Sparkles from Tatyana, and 10 Lucky Stars from Dizzy. They are on a heat mat and I have the light on 24/7. I am going to water them tomorrow.

Yea Grannyrose! I'm glad you could join in on the fun. Hopefully you'll be seeing little babies pop up in a few days.
Mine are all doing well. Growing slowly but surely. I've got 2 that I call my "runts." They're smaller than the rest and a little twisted. I don't know if they'll grow to maturity, but for now they're at least healthy & green.
I keep waiting for the weather to warm up for good so I can put some plants outside. I doubt we'll get any more freezing temps, but it still gets a bit chilly at night. The basil I started at the same time as the adeniums is getting pretty large already. Whenever I have a chance to get the larger plants outside, I'll finally have more room for my adenium babies on my shelf!

What's the status on Round 2?
Just wanted to check with all of you on the official status of Round 2. Do we have new participants? How ar e the babies coming along?
I still have the same amount of babies, 16 Star of Red Sparkles, 15 Dance of Butterfly, and 8 of Pink adeniums. I took them off the heat mat yesterday, 11 days old, but kept the lights right over them. I water them from the bottow once every 2-3 days. It's 65-70 degrees in the room and I hope that they have a chance to fatten up before growing too tall (some of them started to and caudexes just looked too thin).
DizzyD (thanks again) sent me some Lucky Star mix seeds, and I will be starting them in a week.
I don't know what I am going to do with all the babies, but sure I'll find some good use for all of them.
Skbeal and Maryataylor, it's supposed to warm up here to 40's tomorrow. I'll be mailing your seeds and post it here when I do.
Jbaby - I got an email about a PM from you /subject NO SEEDS/, but I couldn't read the PM... I assume that you still have not received them. Please let me know, looks like you are the last one out of 8 I mailed out. I'd like to double check your address too.

I have a question...
If the seeds didnt sink, does that mean they arent viable ???
I am happy to report that I have five babies..and hoping for some more....
"Compost, because a rind is a terrible thing to waste !"
seeds sinking vs not sinking....
I had none of the 1st 6 to sink and had 100% germination. The next set of 2 sank i had 100% germination, the next set of 16 had about 7 sink and 9 not to sink.I have 9 up out of those.

Well,I soaked my seeds 2 of each different variety 8 in all for 4 hours and have them in their 2 1/2 in peat pots.
They are on top of a cookie sheet wraped in 4 layers of heavy duty foil and then under that is a heating pad wrapped in towels and the seeds are sitting on the cookie sheet on top with plastic film wrap on top with holes for ventilation.

Five babies would be quintuplets. Dizzy sent me some Adenium seeds for Christmas. I still haven't received my seeds since I'm leaving town in the near future and don't want to overload my DH with plant care (he has enough to deal with without having to worry about more than my already abundant supply of temperamental plants,) so I will be getting my seeds after the 19th. I did however start the seeds that Dizzy sent me, and lo and behold, thanks to Jo's suggestion about the pancake griddle, my first baby emerged this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see more babies.

I am interested in knowing what kind of soil you all are using? I've got one of those little plastic greenhouses with the peat pellets that I plan to use to start the seeds. Then when they're large enough, I'll transplant them into little pots with Miracle Grow African Violet soil mixed with 50% perlite.

Hey Dizzy, I had a baby with the Christmas Adenium seeds you sent me... It's teeny weeny and has two miniscule leaves....and oddly enough, the funny looking stem looks like the beginnings of a caudex that's just beginning to form....My heat mat is a pancake griddle....I stole the idea from Jo! I don't think she minds though! Maybe we will all have to buy some seeds. This sure is fun!

DizzyD, you mentioned the heavy duty heat mat......actually, it was rather inexpensive! It is nice and large, and looks to be very well made. I got a good price on it, by comparison to some others this size....$47 for the mat & shipping. Think the mat was $32. I ordered it from Gardenocity.

I bought an auction of 100 of them when y'all were all getting excited about them before Christmas, have been including them here & there - & that is the last of them.

Hi everyone,Day 2 and still no babies! I have done everything right I think.
I have them in MG moisture control soil.
I have passed back and forth several times.
They are wrapped with plastic wrap.
Did I mention I have pased back and forth looking for a baby!?
I have them sitting in a foil cake pan.
I had chocolate ice cream.
I have them sitting on top of a foil covered cookie sheet.
I had popcorn with butter.
I have them sitting on top of my towel covered heating pad set on med low.
I passed back and forth.
I have my desk lamp over them and turned on.
Did I mention I have been eating all kinds of junk and pasing?
Oh I am so ready to have a few pop up!
I must just be having false labor pains!
Congrats Jo!! Yours are all poping up nice!

I just planted a few Desert Rose seeds a couple of days ago. My heated mat tray was already filled up w/ seeds, so I placed new seeds in another tray of 4" pots, put clear wrap over it. It's in the mini (2 shelf) greenhouse above the heated tray -the greenhouse sits in front of a west window so between the heated tray and the window they should stay plenty warm within the greenhouse.
Hopefully I'll be seeing some sprouts soon too! This is my first time with Desert Rose seeds.

It's been 3 full days since I planted my seeds. I know it's too early, but I keep checking 10 times a day. So far, only 3 tomato seedlings (I planted some in left over cells at the same time) popped up today...
All of the sudden I started to wonder, may be I planted them too deep? I checked with all the sites, there's no specific info on how deep...or if you need to cover them at all...... New moms, please tell me what you did, how deep did you plant your seeds....I am so worried, Tatyana

The planting information I had said 1/4 inch deep -- not too deep at all, and I just lightly covered it with soil. I have mine planted in Jungle Growth and Perlite. I have mine planted in plastic solo cups and I cut horizantal slits at even intervals right near the bottom. Then I set mine in a heat proof plastic container and filled the container with water. They are drawing water from the bottom up. I've had to fill it a couple of times each day -- I think it's also acting as a humidifier in the room I have them in....Other than that, that's about it....I am using a pancake griddle like Jo did....having pirated the idea from her. I put a piece of aluminum foil across the top of the griddle to aid in heat conduction. When I first planted the seeds, I watered them very thoroughly from the top....but since then -- or since the second day, they've been getting water from the bottom. Once I got the first sprout, I was afraid that watering from the top might damage the tender sprout. I thought I saw the first sprout yesterday, I guess -- maybe the day before, and it appears to have grown enough since then for the caudex to be clearly visible....Today, I noticed that another emerged. I check on them periodically throughout the day. I'm like you, Tatyana....I don't want to miss any opportunity to see that one more has emerged. Did you soak your seeds first and might you have planted them too deeply???? I seriously doubt that I planted mine as deep as 1/4". I've discovered with many types of seeds that I plant that the most likely reason that some haven't germinated is because I planted them too deep.

You know the single cup warmer to keep a cup warm?? If it gets too warm then I could sit a one inch thick metal jar cap on top and place my pot on it??? What do ya'll think????

Wow, you guys are super crazy! But I know what you mean about pacing back and forth! Today is Day 2 for me (actually it'll be about 48 hours around 4:30 this afternoon), so no babies yet. I planted a ton of other seeds with my adeniums (had a 72-cell greenhouse that I filled), so I'm anxiously awaiting all kinds of babies.
When I soaked my adenium seeds, they all floated. I had heard that that's how you tell which are good (but I don't remember if the floaters or sinkers are good), but maybe it doesn't apply to all types of seeds.
I have found some good sites for purchasing adenium seeds and plants. One site sells the grafted named varitiey plants for a decent price (and they're based in NY, so you only pay Priority Mail shipping prices). They don't ship plants till it warms up in spring, but I may end up buying at least one from them come spring. I fell in love with the one called Kaleidoscope! I'm hoping that all the baby plants I'm expecting will satisfy my cravings (therefore saving me some money!), but I'm sure I'll end up buying at least that one anyways. It's an addiction, and I may need an intervention! lol

I am so glad you explained that Jo... I'm from the SC and the only thing I know is about twain is that...twain means.. in between something...like... I am twain a rock and a hard place!!!
That's a hole nother subject but it's hard to grow anything twain a rock and a hard place... I guess these babies need to grow in something else other than a hard place..sooo..I'll use some of our SC, black dirt and sand mixed. I have loads of sandy dirt here,,,add a little fertilizer and it will grow anything! I have a neighbor that grows cows and manure is plentiful. The hard part is getting it in a 5 gallon bucket. I've found that a clothes pin works wonders...

Well, I sure needed a good laugh tonight and my good friend, Jo, was good enough to help me "have at it."
Jo, when things get to you, find a way to laugh..it sure helps to laugh. Get yourself from "tween" the rock and the hard place and find a place of distraction. Gh and all the good friends I have here, is the distarction for me.
Now... someone emailed me and said something like "your neighbor grows cows???" Yep, they sure do, and big ones at that. You would not believe the manure at hand here..clothes pins are a must!!
Can anyone tell me if manure will take the place of miracle grow??? Oh gosh, I bet that will be a distraction once under a grow light and heated too!!!
