I recently purchased my first Desert Rose and would like to know if there are any GF growers of Desert Rose? If so, what info you can offer me.  I.E., soil requirements, feeding, light, etc.  I also purchased a ceramic pot for it. Not a huge one.

Skbeal, didn't see the posting earlier

Yes, I purchased two grafted plants from Taiwan at the same time as I bought my seeds. Harry potter and Big Chubbiness. I really like the shape of the Harry Potter one, but I am still working on growing first leaves on it...for now they are budding, so that's a good sign. The other grafter plant has 2 very long branches and looks a little funny. It started to bud on one of the branches, I'm still not 100% happy with its performance.

We'll see. I will tke pictures WHEN and if it blooms, give me a few months first :)

Desert Rose seeds and plant

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for posting link re: desert rose seeds.  A GH friend sent me desert rose seeds so I will be joining in on your fun.  I will have to wait for several weeks to plant seeds as I will be going out of town and don't want to leave them unattended.  I will definitely read up on this so I will be prepared.

Update on my mature Desert Rose plant. I did transplant DR in a larger pot and clay pot at that.  It seems to like it's now home and so much I now have buds that any day they will be blooming.  I will try and take a pic then post here when they bloom.  It is rather hard for me to do that here though. :(  Anyway, that plant is doing very well indeed!

Frilly, I would want to

Frilly,

I would want to mention the depth of planting your desert rose. If you look at many pictures of mature desert rose plants by googling it, you'll notice that it's planted right on the line between caudex and roots, sometimes you'll even see part of the root sticking out a little.

I purchased 2 plants a month ago. They were dormant, and instructions said that the light should be blocked 50% with black cloth for the first time until the plant comes out of dormancy. Or just place the pot in semi shade. Once leaves start growing, gradually introduce full sun conditions. I agree with Penny's posting about pot size and watering/good drainage. I have little leaves budding up now. I think it took a little longer for my plants to leaf out, but it's because my conditions are more of semi shade to shade for now. I'll be moving my plants to another appartment soon, and they'll be OK>

Hope it helped.

By the way, what is the variety that you bought? I have Harry Potter and Big Chubbiness, can't wait to see them bloom!

Desert Rose info

Hi Tat, thanks for mentioning the depth to plant DR.  I'm sure that is very important.  Not sure how large the root system is.  Will find out soon though. :)   There are leaves and rather large ones on this plant.  I would say it's about 12 inches in height.  I wanted to upload it to yall so you could see it but I'm lost on that.  I don't see the camera on top right to do that.  I was able to re-size it though.

The variety is Nerium - should bloom bright pink according to the nursery.

Desert Rose

I have several large plants of the desert rose. I have mine inside my house as we do get lots of cold weather here. If you live in a cold climate yours will need to be inside as this is a tropical plant. If you live where the weather is warm all the time then you could put outside on a porch.

If you transplant your desert rose. You need to be sure you have a pot that has good drainage holes in it. Cause the desert rose don't want to stand in water all the time. I use miracle grow for all of my pots. And they grow very well and rapid for me.

You also need to choose a pot that is double the size of the desert rose that way you will give it plenty of room to grow. I water my desert rose once a week. But I check it first to be sure it needs water by placing two fingers down in the dirt to see if it i wet, damp, or dry.

Hope this helps you out.

Desert Rose info

Hi Penny,

I'm in zone 9a so not very cold here.  I'll be transplanting in several days.  I need to get some Perlite first.  I do have a ceramic pot with saucer attached.  Hopefully that will drain well.  And yes, I would say it is twice the size of the plant.

I don't see camera on top right to upload.  Can anyone help out there with uploading my pic?

How can images be added to this post?  Penny, I would love to see your two Desert Rose Plants.  What color are they?

I'd plant it in a mix of

I'd plant it in a mix of about half to 2/3 Jungle Growth and the rest perlite. Mix them well, Create a hole in the soil so you can put the root system in there. I don't think desert roses typically have super deep root systems. They may be more like Plumeria and plumeria don't have deep root systems. Water it thoroughly and then keep it in a warm and sunny location. You can take it outside during the summer months. Make sure you keep it evenly moist. Don't fertilize it when you plant it because the Jungle Growth has a long acting fertilizer in it anyway. Hope this helps.

Tatyana, you have Harry Potter? OH MAN! I can't wait to see pictures of that one......that one is probably my absolute favorite. There is a yellow one that's also gorgeous but it's not available yet.

Aren't these fun to grow? I'm having a blast. I've got all my second ones on a pancake griddle waiting to germinate...They appear to be slower to germinate than the Lucky Stars mix!

Purchased a plant

Frilly we have been a part of a desert rose from seed experiment here so that is where you are getting these answers from.  From what I understand that like sun, water and feeding.

Desert Rose

Frilly

I soaked my desert rose seeds in warm water for 2 to 4 hours. I also planted mine in small pots with miracle grow. I then placed in small ziplock sandwich bags and then punched a hole in the baggie for air circulation.  Also be sure you have good drainage in your pots that you choose to use.

I also place mine on a heating pad on low temp to keep them to the warmth between 75 to 90 degrees. I also placed so it gets a good bit of light from the sun through a window.  You can also use grow lights to keep your seeds warm and to get the amount of light needed.  Some seeds sprout very fast within 5 days and some seeds can take as long as 3 weeks to sprout.

So Good luck. I have grown 40 seeds now and am trying 20 more different kinds of seeds now.

Here are some pointers!

Before you plant the seeds, you need to soak them for a minimum of four hours. Plant them in a really good draining soil. I used jungle growth for some of mine. It's like African Violet soil mix. Mix it with 50% perlite. You will need to keep them on a heat mat or something heated. Cover with plastic and make sure that you keep them moist. For my first batch, I used a plastic solo cup. I cut slits in the bottom to allow moisture to come up from the bottom and placed the cup in a heat proof plastic pan that I continued to pour water in as needed. They will need light, too....Full spectrum lights or plant lights will work best. Seeds won't germinate without heat that keeps them at 75-90 degrees and continuously moist. They take about 4-7 days to sprout. Once they have 4 leaves, you can remove them from the heat, but they will continue to need light and regular water. Make sure that your soil drains very well.....a regular potting soil probably won't have enough stuff in it to make it drain well. A ceramic pot probably isn't the ideal thing since it might not have proper drainage, plus clay tends to absorb a lot of water, so it would take water away from the plant.

Hope these suggestions help to get you started.
