Concrete Wall ideas?

I figured this would be a good fit for a first post in here.

Some of you may recall the junk yard that used to sit behind me that was purchased this year. Well as of now it's a giant muddy mess that is pushing over the wall in my yars. My fence will soon bee replaced by 4 feet or concrete topped with 5 feet of vinyl fencing. I have to move my garden because on the lack of sunlight I will have from the wall not to mention that the thing will be big and ugly. Any ideas as so what to grow, build, put next to it to make it not so awful to look at each day? I have  three grapes that I'm going to move if they aren't killed when they put in the wall so that they can grow and cover parts of it. I've been thinking about trying to get more wisteria going like the front yard. We are probably going to get quaking aspen starts from my parents to block the new view of big ugly townhomes. But I'm just wondering if I should set up benches, or try and build soemthing to break up the 75 foot wide wall I get to stare at each day....help!! I miss my junk yard that at least had trees!!

What to do.....

Well I know the decision is yours. But you could always let ivy grow on it. I think it will stick to the wall with no problem. I see it growing on some houses around here. But if you had some types of ancors that you could put into the concrete wall (such as screws or nails) you could also let a wisteria or any other type of vine grow on it. Or you could always just plant some type of evergreen hedge or blooming shrub. These are just suggestions...

If you don't mind the effort

If you don't mind the effort to trim and train English Ivy, it's a great cover, and it's green all the time. I have it covering a chain link fence, and while I do need to trim it back so it doesn't go all over, it looks a darned sight better than chain link! You might need to attach some chicken wire to the concrete here and there, depending on how rough the surface is. It's a backdrop for everything else in the yard. Some spots are still uncovered by the ivy, but I found that Home Depot has reed fence rolls for $16-something, and I want to put those up with wire. By the time it deteriorates, I'll either have ivy to cover, or money for a better fence. I hope.

Great ideas!!

Wow! What great ideas everyone!! I especially like the idea of adding seating and maybe a water feature along with the climbers! And there are many plants that should do well in shelter and shade. Including lovely clematis!!

Zoestar, if I remember correctly, this is a rather large space you have to play with, isn't it? Oh, wish I could come help and play in the dirt with you!! We'd have a ball!

It might be neat to paint

It might be neat to paint it...or do small areas of tile on the wall, mirrors, or you could add stucco to the wall for texture and then paint it a nice color....I would put pretty trellis on the wall, and do some climbing plants...there are some clematis that love to have their feet in the shade, and tops in the sun..

There are some great ideas on DIY if you get a chance to look...I would look at this as a wonderful new way to decorate your garden....

Can you add benchs along the wall maybe in a spot or two....or build a small seating area with an arbor over it, and that would take away the view just being the wall ??

You could even do a bunch of flowering bushes along the wall......soo many ideas...good luck with it, and I would love to see what you decide to do

If it were me and it was

If it were me and it was now going to be a shade area, I would put in shade or partial shade loving plants, some climbing. Maybe put in a water fixture on the wall and  mirrors to enhance the surrounding flowers. And with me being a bird lover I would have to have bird feeders and houses too. Hope this helps to give you some ideas! Theresa Laughing

concrete wall

this might be a good time to think about adding a pergola, fire pit or pondless waterfall to break up the space. Do you paint or know someone who does? A mural of plants and flowers would cause the space to disappear!
