If I add a lean-to greenhouse on the side of a building which side should I put it on North South East or West?

I agree!

The best sun exposure will be south and west. If you have to choose between one or the other, I'd be inclined to say west. You'd get the most sun from that direction, but if you can face it sort of southwest, you'd have the best of both worlds.

SW is usally the best.

SW facing is usally the best exposer but somtimes others work just fine. On my property the driveway is on the ssw side of the huse and the w side is our front lawn. I'm actually locating my greenhouse on the north side of the house. crazy you say but it's far enough away from the house that it gets 7 hours  of direct sunlight and it's in a very convinet spot. I'd say that you really have look at your own property. Pick the possible spots for your greenhouse ( based on convience, water, electricity etc.) and then on a sunny day go outside every hour and check if the spot is sunny. at the end of the day add up the totals and pick a spot thatg  is convient at still gets 6-10 hours of sun a day.

hope this helped
