What cool things are you growing?

I've add impatients, a ruby coral bells, and a new hosta to the south shade garden and ferns to the north garden.  I'm working to plant things on the north side of the house that goes in the shade so I don't have to try to mow there anymore.  I put in some bleeding hearts but only one of them is up and some cinnamon fern and only one of them came up.  I'd like to put in some lily of the valley but haven't seen any this year.

What cool things are you growing or planning in your shade garden this year?

For some reason my husband

For some reason my husband thinks if it is on the north (shady) side then it needs to be covered with concrete. ie sidewalks. So a tree may be my only hope for enough shade for a shade garden. I have all my lovely hostas in the only patch of shade have and they are rally doing great.  I also have LOV  and astillbes in the same small shaded.

3rdpigkid, it's probably

3rdpigkid, it's probably the wrong time of year to be looking for hardy cycalmen.  My local Lowes and Home Depo always have them for sale around January when they're in bloom, but they're all gone by now.

I'm trying a bunch of new gingers in my shade and part shade garden.  Some are starting to sprout up, and I hope they all survive because the armidillos have been digging them up a lot lately!  I've also got 2 new ligularias I planted in the fall.  One has a small sprout on it now, but again it seems to be the favorite place for the armidillos to dig.  :(  I've got some giant white calla lillies that are doing well and a Purple Palace coral bells that I picked up for about $6 at Lowes a few weeks ago.  I've got 3 kinds of Toad Lillies that are all vigourously growing now, and my little Illicium Floridium (Florida Anise Tree) is in bloom.

This shade garden was my big project this past fall.  I can't wait to see all the gingers in bloom!

That's what I figured...

...I must be looking for them during the wrong time of year.  I was thinking that they would be available in the fall for some reason...although I just did pick some up at Wally World and when I asked, of course, no one knew what kind they were.  I looked them up and I think they may actually be a hardy variety.  We'll see...

Check out my trade list!!

I have EE's sprouting.  I'm

I have EE's sprouting.  I'm so glad.  I was beginging to think they would never come up.  I'm still waiting on the cannas and calla lillies.  Oh yeah the cladiums out front have started sprouting so the ones out back should be up soon.

My morning walk

As I go on my morning walk I pass this yard.  The people that live there are friendly and always talk to me.  They have been working on the front yard this spring.  I saw the results yesterday.  I find that it is so pretty.  I took this picture of it.  They  have worked to make a pretty shade garden under their big trees.  My Walk: This is a yard I pass everyday on my walk

Shade Garden

Ok, this is one that I'm concentrating on this year.  I have so far:  Astilbe "American" (pink), Brunerra "Jack Frost", pink lily of the valley and Hellebore "Royal Heritage".  I started some mixed coleus seeds already - hope they survive!!  I will be trading soon (on another group) to get some various types of ferns including maiden, christmas, ostrich and japanese painted.  I'm hoping to be getting ladies mantle, chocolate chip bugleweed, pachysandra, and Purple Palace' Coral Bells in some upcoming trades - we've talked about it but the trades aren't complete yet.  I did get some jack-in-the-pulpit seeds and jacobs ladder seeds from trade. I'd like to try Tricyrtis - Sinonome also.

One thing I am REALLY on the hunt for is hardy cyclamen - I can't find anybody who has this for trade and I haven't seen it in the nursery either - I must be looking for it at the wrong time of year.  I can find florist cyclamen but that's not hardy in my zone.  I can find it in catalogs but it's SO expensive and I have trust issues - I'm not sure I trust catalogs enough to spend that kind of money on them!  Any ideas?
