Not seeing a forum for raccoons and skunks, I decided to post here about these pests. We have a "humane" trap that does not injure the animal, and we load it with cat food. Night before last, WE CAUGHT A SKUNK! My DH had been wondering what on earth he would do if that happened!! He prepared somewhat by tying a rope to the trap door so he could open it from a distance and let the animal come out on his own. Well it did, and it just stayed there for a good while. In the meantime, DH decided he would shoot the skunk before it got away, and he had to keep getting it out of the trap. I hope this is not offensive to animal rights people we may have as members here...but we didn't need another disease carrying rodent rooting around our place. Armadillos, which can carry LEPROSY have been a problem in the past & Skunks carry RABIES!! When he shot it, the skunk odor permeated the whole area, under my potting shed, and the grassy area where it was laying. Upon doing a search for eliminating the odor, and sterilizing the area DH found a recipe for 1 cup bleach to one gallon water. He covered the entire area with this mixture. IT DID THE TRICK!! All the skunk stink is completely gone. To date, he has trapped and carried back to the woods EIGHT RACCOONS! They sure must like Meow Mix cat food!!

Last year I trapped 14 skunks

Last year I trapped 14 skunks and shot 2 more. I have the trap set right next to the chicken pen. I've only caught two this year. The first one I trapped this year though had already killed one of our hens. Last year Fiona came running down here to the basement all excited. She had just seen a skunk go into the chicken house. I got out there and switched on the light inside and he was there. He did spray, but I got him before he killed any chickens.

Wow!!! 14 skunks!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have to share your skunk story with my hubby! Fourteen is a lot of skunks, but then the chicken house was drawing them...guess I didn't know skunks preyed on chickens as large as they are. Sorry you lost one of your hens to one of them. Had you read about the bleach/water mix to neutralize the odor? Take care to keep those rascals away from your hen house!

I wrote a nice long post and

I wrote a nice long post and it went away. But I had never heard of the bleach remedy for the odor removal. We obviously have a pretty good population of skunks around here. We also have a family of beavers in the creek down in the pasture. We have seen 9 of them. There is mom and pop beaver and two litters of younguns.
