This is a volunteer. It is growing behind my green ee's and a volunteer lantana. Does anyone know what it is? It looks like some type of pepper plants. It has tons of little pepper looking pods on it. I hope you all can see this pic better. The blooms are tiny white and pods are oval instead of round like the nightshade pic I found.

Seeds

If you decide to save seeds from this plant I would love some. My stepfather LOVES all kinds of pepper plants. Sarah

SAHM of 3 kids, an 11 year old son, 4 year old boy girl twins and wife of 12 years.

If I can save

them you are welcome to them Sarah. I hope the birds don't get to them first. In that corner of my yard(southeast), I have gotten a lantana, a tree(unknown)and my neighbor has a fig tree hanging over. I wish I could get one of those to volunteer on my side of the fence.

That is...

A Pequin pepper plant, also called a chiltepin. The birds eat the peppers and then the seeds fall from their droppings. One year we had 14+ plants growing in the yard all deposited by the birds. The peppers turn green and then red. They are extememly hot too. I even tried making salsa from them once, but I had to cut it so many times to take the fire out that I ended up throwing the batch out. They will certainly light you up!!

Yes

Susann, Connie and Oma both were on the money. Glad I was able to find out what it is. I didn't want to have anything around that is poison. Little Mya loves to try to help me all the times and I couldn't take the chance.

Thank you Oma

and Connie. It is a pretty plant to look at but since I dn't know where it came from I think I will pass on eating it. I sure hope it doesn't spread everywhere.

You're welcome

Grannyrose it will only spread through the kindness of your birds. The mockingbirds love the little pepper. For more information you can visit: http;//chetbacon.com/peppers/hot peppers.html

Possibly a native pepper

I found a few native Capsicums (peppers) in your area. Capsicum annum var. glabriusculum (Dunal) looks very much like what you have, but not sure if you can ID possitively.... http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=CAANG .....Sending you some links,Dor.

Thanks

Connie, it sure does look alot like the Capsicums. I don't remember planting the cayenne pepper but my neighbor to the back and side are very close. It's possible that it came from one of them.

Pepper?

Now that I can see the upright pods, does look more like a pepper, but they are both Solanaceae family. Please keep taking pics as it develops so we can get more looks at it?
grannyrose's picture

I will

keep watching it and taking more pics. In the meantime I will keepp the grands and pets away from it until we are sure what it is. Thanks Dor

Dor, can't see it real well, but are the berries in clumps of 3? If so, check out nightshade.
