Tulips in the shade

During last weekends trip to New York city, my wife and I visited the promenade at Brooklyn Heights. I saw tulips growing under bushes - do tulips grow in the shade? The day was cloudy but I am sure that under all the bushes the tulips will be in a shadow all day long.
Thanks
Tulips in shade
Early blooming tulips and species tulips (not the fancy hybrids) do fine in part or dappled shade. Protection from the sun part of the day, especially in warm climates, actually helps prolong blooms and keeps the colors from fading. Early blooming bulbs planted under deciduous trees or shrubs usually get full sun before the trees or shrubs leaf out.
No bulbs will do well in full or deep shade, but some other bulbs for part shade are Crocus, Blue Squill, Snakes head, Snowdrops, Daffodils, Windflower, and Spanish Bluebells.
