Too much shade!

Submitted by Lavender2 on Sat, 09/29/2007 - 18:58
Once upon a time, I thought I had too much shade! Then I learned how wonderful it was to work there, and how beautiful a shade garden can be! Many types of weeds don't do well in the shade, and the sun doesn't bake the soil dry so quickly! I now cherish my mature Oaks! Anyone else have a shade gardening addiction to share?

Made in the shade!
Lavender, your shade garden is very inviting...it's so pretty! Are those ligularia in the background, the yellow that I see?
I agree with you, for all the same reasons! I have a shade garden and it's my favorite place to garden, and to relax.
I have those same hostas, the marginata and the green one with the purple flowers. I love how the green one produces so many flowers, don't you? It's real showy and makes the shade garden sing! And your garden is singing a Happy song!
If I could figure out how to reduce my pics I'd post them.

Hi Mary... all that
Hi Mary... all that yellow is LOTS of Black-eyed Susans. I do have a few Ligularias in that garden though. I do love the purple flowering hostas. It's hard to find many purple fall blooming perennials... and what could be more easy!?!
Thanks, Mary... I'd love to see your shade garden!... we'll have to work on getting your pics posted! Let me know if you'd like some help.

next spring
we will be concentrating on the shaded woodland area...I have done a little, but I want to do a really nice area...trying to get rid of some more poison first. HD is selling some bare root plants this year for woodland gardens...so I did pick them up, since they said it takes two years for them to acclimate.
I think you should share more pics of your garden too...I am learning a lot ....thanks so much !
BTW what is the plant on the right hand side of your sidewalk ? purple blooms...

Hi Kym... Those are a plain ole Hosta. I don't know the name, but they're a common, less desired variety, by some people anyway. I love them! They bloom later than most, late Aug, Sept. here, and have a longer bloom time than some of the fancy ones. They get big real quick, too.

hmmm..
Lav, I asked cause the leaves look a bit different and they are much fuller then the ones I have..mine all look more like your varigated ones. Have you heard about the horrible disease being spread to hostas...I am kinda afraid to buy anymore of them...

I have tried to identify that Hosta, but with over 2000 varieties I gave up. They have been there over 10 years, some probably have not been divided.
I have heard about the disease, but I haven't heard much about it in this area...yet. lol I called a friend of mine that works at the UofM, but haven't heard back from her yet. It would be good to research in your area and check out local sources.
Here's a link for you or others that may be interested in more about it..
