Plants in Pots!

I have quite a few plants in pots.  I have to take them in in winter because we freeze here!  I have been able to keep my California succulents going, except for a column cactus I lost in '06.  Just froze in the garage!  My others, jade, anemone and aloes are all thriving.  I also have my Christmas poinsettias thriving out on the deck.  My gardenia got really sick indoors but is now sending out some green leaves!  My hibiscus looks great and I added a primrose to the "family"!

in container

Well, I would love to have indoor plants in containers, but the cat won't allow it. Lord knows I love the cat like a baby, but I can not seem to teach him to stay out of the plants. I have ONE potted plant on a very tall planter that I don't even know the name of. My great aunt gave it to me when we moved into the house (along with 6 other plants I had to give away because the cat kept knocking them over or peeing in them) I did try putting tobasco sauce on some cling wrap and covering the soil with it after I dabbed a few drops into his mouth. That worked for about one week. Then, JuJu was back to his nosey self.

Outside is a totally different matter! I guess I have to compensate for the lack of indoor plants. I have 6 pots full of tall bearded iris and one pot with anemone in it. Plus, I have one pot with a recent trade of Aloe Vera. Then, I have 3 pots with butterfly tulip, buttercups, and peacock orchids in them. Also, I have some painted pink daisey in another pot. Last, but not least, I have Calla lily twilight in one pot by the front door. All the other containers (around 20) are full of iris that I will trade soon.

Recently, I started 5 trays of seeds from trade (blue talc hosta, sunflower senation mix, fuschia 4 o'clocks, blue columbine, and double columbine mix). I have a lot of other seeds and bulbs that I have not yet planted anywhere, but I need to get some more jiffy start trays. Those things are neat. I got them from walmart for like 2 dollars or something like that.

However, the majority of my plants are in flower beds. I spent lots of time and money getting the soil fixed up good all around the house and several raised flower beds. So, I have lots of space with nothing in it yet. I have daylilies (around 20 types), dahlias (2 types), jumbo gladiolus (3 types), crocus (3 types), tulips (4 types), grape hyacinth, daffodil, ipheon, tall bearded iris (4 types), japanese iris (2 types), anemone (5 types), paperwhite (1 type), ornamental cabbage purple, ornamental cabbage white, caladium (2 types), lambs ear, wandering jew, calla lily pink, azelea pink, redbud trees, white flowering tree of unknown origin, and snowball trees/bush in the flower beds. So, that is what I have so far in the beds, but I still have room for more (lol, we can always find room for more can't we)

So, does anyone have any ideas how to keep a nosey cat out of plants so I can have more on the inside?

Cats!

One time I used aluminum foil to cover the dirt in my indoor plants, to keep the cats off.  They didn't like sepping on the foil.  There are repellents sold in the garden stores too, I believe.  It's annoying I know!

Stones in flower pots

Char,

I use to have a ferret that loved digging in my f'pots. Here's what I did that worked...

Cut a piece of plastic canvas to fit over the soil and around the plant. Place river rocks over the plastic canvas in a single layer ( I hot glued mine onto the plastic canvas to keep the ferrret from moving them). This also keeps toddlers from playing in the soil.

Simply water over the rocks..water will soak thru to the soil. The rock layer also holds moisture in so you won't have to water as often, making it a good choice for outdoor potted plants too!

Very Cool Idea!

Although I don't have a problem with my cat getting into my plants, I love your idea of the plastic canvas with rocks glued to it.  That would be a decorative topping in itself, even without a cat around.

All of my plants are in pot, seedling everywhere around here, since the snow just keeps coming here in NY, pots in the living room, kitchen counter, and the bedroom floors, might even put some in the bathroom.LOL

Try a plant sprayer!

I always used a plant sprayer filled with water. Every time the cat would think she wanted to play with my plants, I'd spray her with water. I'd do that when she did things that I didn't want her to do. You can also wad up a newspaper and hit it on the floor...Cats have sensitive ears and the noise will scare them. Once they get used to the idea that it will be punished for playing in your plants, it will stop...Cats hate water so it's a good deterrant.

Chellflower, sounds like you

Chellflower, sounds like you have yourself a lasagna garden going! Other things to leave out of the compost heap are dairy and meat products. They can easily grow all sorts of bacteria and the warm and moist environment is a perfect breeding ground for all sorts of yucko stuff that could make you super sick! Egg shells and coffee grounds are fabulous in the compost heap.

Since I truly lack space around here, I intend to try something different this year. I'm going to grow my tomatoes upside down!

I'd really love to have a compost heap, but I'm not sure how well my landlord would take it....And since I have a lot of neighbors, I don't want to do anything to give them ideas. They are already pretty horrible about picking up the little duties that their animals leave around.

My prized container plants are probably the Maranta Variegata that I started from a tuber and that's just getting leaves, my brugs, my Brazilian Fireworks and my Stephanotis Floribunda. Nearly all of my indoor houseplants will go outside for the summer once the weather warms up enough.

Re; Chellflower, sounds like you

Hi Susan,

Yea, I know it prob'ly sounds like I have a 'buffet' going on in the compost bin. Since we don't have much grass to mow, other than a few patches of St. Augustine, and the rest of our small yard is weeds (where the topsoil wasn't washed out and bare), I don't have any other organic 'greens' to add to the compost.

So, every time I clean out the fridge, any veggies that have begun to wilt (lettuce, cucumbers, celery...) go to the compost.

Other than meat and dairy, here are some of the things that I read should Not

go in it:

bones

 Any cooked/canned veggies

citrus friut

paper with colored ink

'few' tomatoes

'very few if any' potato peels (starch)

I added a starter tonic to the initial pile that's a mixture of beer, ammonia & water. The mixture supplies nitrogen, and enzymes to speed up the process, plus helps prevent weeds should any seeds be present.

I'm still new at composting, but so far the black plastic 'trash can' method seems to work pretty well. It doesn't smell as long as it's kept mixed. By adding the suggested percentages of leafs/paper, greens and soil I'm hoping to have some nice black compost soon. I have to keep it close to the house though, so the garbage men don't mistake it for the trash LOL.

container gardening

I cleaned out my flower boxes on the porch in early fall and replanted with several different varieties of lettuce and spinach.  Wow..have I been kept in salad greens, and the cat's seem to love them as well, I usually have to fight them off when I pinch some back for a salad.  I've started approximately 6 dozen or so containers of different seeds for flowers both annual and perrenial along with my spring herbs.

I also keep some water plants in containers on the front porch and at different areas in the front yard garden beds.  They do double duty really, one for some interest as well as watering areas for wandering cats in the neighborhood.

I always keep a few containers of oat grass and cat nip going for my unrulely mob as well. (5 cats and 5 dogs) and boy do they love the oat grass.

Have quite a few gingers in containers right now that will need to be seperated and planted in the ginger garden this spring.  I started some of them from ginger I bought at the grocery store.  They will do double duty as well..after they flower I can dig some of them up and use the ginger, replant some of the root for more.

Dorothy, if I were you, the

Dorothy, if I were you, the first investment I would make is in some composting supplies. If you start composting, you'll have lots of good organic stuff to add to and improve your soil in no time, and aside from what you have to lay out at the onset for supplies, you'll be getting great organic matter for free. Whatever you do, don't add dairy or meat to the pile. You can save all your kitchen scraps and they'll do wonders -- especially coffee grounds and egg shells!

Re; Dorothy, if I were you..

Susan's right,  kitchen scraps are great for compost. Just leave out the citrus friut peels (too acidic).  Don't forget to add your bananna peels though- great for potassium!

I recently made an inexpensive composter from a black plastic trash can with a lid. Just drill a hole at the bottom for drainage and add a few around the top for airation.

I placed a layer of newspaper, leaves, scraps, and a little bit of soil, then started over with newspaper... I give it water/leftover coffee about once a week and every few days I roll roll it over on its side a few turns to mix it up.  Even though the weather isn't very hot yet, it seems to be composting pretty well so far just being in a sunny spot.

Compost

I  have a pretty good size compost bin and it is cooking.  I hope it does work well in my soil.  I really don't wont to have to build raised beds but I am thinking that may be my only option.  I have boggy areas too that I don't think any amount of compost is going to help.

Acacius, what size pot is your Brugmansia in? I'm supposed to be getting a rooted cutting in trade & I would like to keep it in a pot as it grows larger.
--Sharry

Sharry, I have my rooting

Sharry,

I have my rooting cuttings in waterbottles that i made into pots haha. Its really cool cause I can see the root growth. They grow so fast! I will need to put in bigger pots really soon. I got a lil plant that I potted into a 6 inch pot. Depending on how big it is you may want to go bigger. I read from other people that grow them in containers in a brug forum you can start with a small planter but bump up as it grows. Some start with a gallon and go from there. It makes sense with how fast they grow. Then they go from a gallon to 5 then to a 10 . I believe to get it to full grown you would need up to a 30 gallon. I can send you a link to the forum if you would like... send me a pm! I hope this helps!
