Starting Plumeria from Seed

Hi Y'all I wanted to share how I am starting Plumeria from seed with Great Success! There is nothing scientific about it but....I have had a 100% germination success rate! First I start with a clear plastic container with a lid (disposable salad bowls from McDonald's is what I used) I poke holes in bottom for good drainage. If you look at my picture here on the right you will see I am using all kinds of disposable containers (IE. cherry tomato baskets, bakery containers etc.)[img_assist|nid=654|title=seed starting|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=250|height=188] I filled about half full with a good potting soil, you want to leave enough room for height growth of seed. Place the seeds in the soil tip down with wings out of the soil. Put lid on and place in light I use fluorescent for my seed starting.Keep Moist not wet until they sprout. When they are tall enough they are touching the lid remove top and place back under light.[img_assist|nid=655|title=Plumeria sprouts|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=250|height=188] I let them continue to grow like this until the leaves form and mature. At this time I re pot into small pots and place outside under my covered patio where they get sun but not hot full sun.[img_assist|nid=656|title=Plumeria Baby|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=250|height=188] When they outgrow this pot I put them in large pots, now a more permanent home. I keep them in partial shade until more mature to prevent leaf burn. When they are more mature I put them in Full sun and let them Grow! I water regularly and feed about once a month. I started my seeds in the Spring of 2007 here is a picture of them in the late Summer of 2007.[img_assist|nid=658|title=Plumerias 5 months|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=250|height=187] They are now about 3' tall and branching out! This is the first experience I have had with starting Plumeria but it has been Great! I have started about 12 that I have kept a few of and shared the rest. I now have 4 new sprouts started for some friends! My plants are Plumeria Maui and I am looking for seeds from any and all varieties of Plumerias if anyone has any to share? I will keep you posted on the progress of these babies! Thank You for letting me share. God Bless You All Treva

Peggy, I agree....I want

Peggy, I agree....I want plumeria and ginger, too!!!!!!!! The plumeria that I like the most, I think is the bridal bouquet one, although the Hawaiian rainbow one is quite spectacular......Oh boy, we've got a bunch of tropical junkies here, don't we????? You are pretty amazing for being able to over winter all these tropicals in your climate. You're in zone 6, aren't you? I am in zone 8, but I wish I lived in zone 11! hehehe Susan, the Texas Yankee and the Forum Manager   Click here to see my trade list: http://www.gardenhere.org/node/271

I want to try my hand at all kinds...and you know i really want the blooms but I do get so much JOY out of seeing them mature from seed.... I can truly see God in its growth!! Question about plumeria from

Question about plumeria from seed. I have 9 growing right now with growlights and heat mat. I am curious whether you have seen any bloom from seed. I hear they can take 3 years plus to bloom.

That doesn't sound all that

That doesn't sound all that far fetched to me....It would take them a while to emerge and establish a good root system, and then it would take a while for a seedling to grow enough to have some good, dense, thick foliage so that it could provide adequate nourishment for blooms to form. There are many perennials where you don't get blooms from them until the second year, so I would think that it would take at least that long, but if you started them from seed indoors, I imagine you'd have to wait until they were big and strong enough to be able to go into the ground and then there's no telling how long it would take them to get acclimated to that. After you have them growing in the ground for a while (and they are somewhat mature and maybe about a foot tall,) try giving them some Epsom salts. I think PreciousJoy said that jump started the bloom process on some of hers that weren't blooming and they weren't started from seeds! Hi Y'all I have been told 2

Hi Y'all I have been told 2 to 3 years for blooms...but we will see! This is my first year for Plumeria. I will say I am Amazed at how fast they have grown...I intend to keep mine in pots to be able to protect from the cold. Here are some more pictues of my now 6 month old babies! [img_assist|nid=1504|title=Plumeria baby from seed 6 months|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=150|height=200] [img_assist|nid=1505|title=Plumeria Baby 6 month new branch!|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=200|height=150] [img_assist|nid=1506|title=Plumerias 6 months|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=200|height=150] As you can see their trunks are really developing and the leaves are BIG! although the cold spurt kinda hurt the leaves. Oh Treva, they look so beautiful. What kind of Plumeria are those? Where will you keep them over the winter???? I don't think they like anything below 50 degrees -- if that, do they? Susan, the Texas Yankee and the Forum Manager   Click here to see my trade list: http://www.gardenhere.org/node/271

Awesome ! What fun you will have when they bloom as most often grown by seed their not true to Mom and this is how some new varieties are started ! I was thinking of ordering some seeds. One auction on Ebay is for a hundred seeds several different Plumeiras. Then places like Plumeria Gallery sell a few different seeds in groups of ten seeds. They say it takes 3 plus years to bloom by seed but Treva yours are growing so fast ! Gosh noew I wish I did not sell ll my plant sntads and light fixtures grow lights.. I had 24 double four foot fixtures when I was raising Av's. Now I just have grow spot lights and need to get more for my Adeiums (SP) desert Rose plants if it gets cold at night beloew 65 their coming in the house !

Wow Treva thanks for the great info and the pictures always make it so much easier to understand. You have a great place to start seeds... What time of year do you start the seeds ? Im curious because you show the plant at five months..so would it be a good time to start them inside in the fall, to have a mature plant in the spring ?
