Slugs, ugghh-natural remedies

I've been plagued with slugs in my garden.  They are just lovin my Brugs, uggghh.  Did some research last night on natural ways I can deal with them.

Please don't do this - I read where you can pour salt on each slug.  They will die almost immediately but so will the leaves.  This a.m. I went out to look at my brugs only to discover the leaves are turning in and are discolored.

I also read where Lava Rocks may deter slugs.  Supposedly they do not like crawling over the Lava Rocks.  Also for some reason, they do not like copper.

Today I went out and bought Lava Rocks.  I had a little project when I got in- spreading the Lava Rocks around each potted Brug.  Five of the pots are in the garden closeknit, the other is on bricks.  I also purchased copper wiring as a back up.  I used it around the potted brug that is sitting on my brick pavers.

I will be out again tonight to see what is going on.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

Slugs on Hosta

FF, and DD,  Thanks for the informational updates on how to deal with slugs.  They really are ugghy aren't they, besides they can decimate a small plant almost overnight.  My  hosta are up, DD, and looking gorgeous!  Better go to the junk closet and look for my copper wire.  Good luck FF with  your slug demolition.  Wink  I'm pulling for you girlie!!   maw

thanks maw!  I tried the beer thing and it worked.  I need to find some cheap beer for this thugs.Tongue out  I have about six potted plants in the garden, and one potted plant on pavers.  I put the copper around the potted plant on the pavers.  It seem to be working.  I've got the lr around the others.  I need to also put the copper wire around those as well but haven't done it yet.

latest on slugs

In my garden at 11 pm. last night.  Saw more slugs. Several large ones on plants, several small on crape myrtle bark.   Tonight I will try beer, just don't want to give a bottle up to them.Surprised  I also placed a wooden board in the area.  We'll see.  Will keep yall posted.

Here's the latest on my slug invasion and my tactics.

Okay yall, went out to the garden at midnight last night to see if the lava rocks/copper were doing the trick.  Would you believe I had to hand kill three large slugs?   Foot in mouth  And, get this.  There were at least three small slugs climbing up the neighboring crape myrtle right next to the potted brugs.  I didn't think to put lava rock around the tree, smart slugs huh?  Smile  I was told not to put copper around trees as this can kill a tree.  I may have to go out tomorrow and buy another bag of lava rocks. :(  I'll be back out tonight investigating again.  I can't believe the slugs thought to climb up the tree, some of the brug leaves are touching the tree so that could scoop right over.  Can you believe it?  I was actually impressed by these slugs!

Just a note on

Just a note on smashing snails and slugs...the eggs can survive a squish. It might be better to put them in a can with soapy water, or close tightly and put them in the trash.

Also, milk in traps works similar to beer, if you don't happen to have beer around.

If you don't like going out at night to hunt... you might try placing cleaned out grapefruit rinds, halved potatoes, or even boards on the ground. Slugs will attatch under them when the sun comes up and you can hunt in the morning.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth. All natural. LOTS of uses for this stuff - great organic pesticide and will not harm kids (2 legged or 4 legged & furry), can be used outside, inside, and with food grade -even in your cereals & grains.

Google it and you'll find lots of vendors for it, if your local home store doesn't have it.

If you are not familiar with it, here's a great article on it DE article

There are different grades available, but for brugs, just plain old DE

would be fine.

Hi Dizzy, DE, yep, I heard of it, checked it out and read that one must wear protective gear as it can irritate eyes and LUNGS.  Didn't want to mess with that, trying to stay all natural and safe here. :)

DE IS all natural & safe

FF, DE IS all natural & even safe enough to consume - in fact, it doesn't get much more natural than this stuff. In case you didn't know, it is probably already IN most of the cereals & grains you buy to eat now.

But it is in a powder form; even flour and sugar are lung hazards if you are sprinkling & poofing it everywhere (flour dust is even flammable). That's why they reccomend wearing a painter's mask if you will be spreading it heavily.  If you check out hazards for any powder they all suggest those paper masks.

 you can also use the

you can also use the crushed oryster shell...you can get it at any feed store...it works really well...same as crushed egg shells...and then around here I learned last year that they use some type of bark mulch  for slugs...but at the moment I can not remember what type it is..

I use the crushed oryester shell around my veggies and then the  beer in the flowers...but I just pop the top off the can of beer and dig a hole and plant the can with the opening sticking out at a slant...works well in the flower beds..

last year we had the aweful mess of the darn things. I used beer and then my hubby went to Lowe's and got some snail bait. That worked but I had lost some really nice plants first.

I have used beer also.  But

I have used beer also.  But I haven't used it on my garden here.  At our last house, I used the tins from kipper snacks and just scattered them around the garden.  The last time I used them I was just filling the last tin, when I looked behind me and our dog had been following me lapping up the beer as I filled each tin.  Didn't hurt the dog though and she sure did sleep well that night.

Slugs

You can also put crushed egg shells around the base of the plants and they won't crawl across that either. Or you can put jar lids full of beer in your garden and that is suppose to make them they come to the beer . Those might be a little less expensive than the lava rocks and you can recycle with the egg shells.

I take my used egg shells and put them into a container (with an air tight lid) and add a water to it and let it sit over night and then I crush the shells up really good and then poor the water and egg shells around the base of my plants. Not only does it keep the snails away but it fertilizes the plant as well...

Actually, the beer is pretty

Actually, the beer is pretty effective. I get snails, too, and horrendous quantities of them....To tell you the truth, the most full proof method that is the least noxious to other things (plants, grass, etc., ) is to pick them up, gently place them on the side walk and squash until you hear them squish. When you pick up your foot, there will be a ghastly mess on the ground, but the slug or snail will be gone and all your plants and flowers will be in tact! I do this constantly!

slugs

Hi sk, I tried beer last year and that was pretty effective.  Night before last I went out and "plucked" slugs 12 o'clock at night with a flash light and flood lights on -lol - Then last night, I decided to pour salt, mistake - my poor brugs, I sure hope they are forgiving, I feel so bad about it. Darn slugs - I was sort of tired "plucking" and smashing with my clog, tried the lava rock and copper thing.
