This works for small divisions or seedlings where the roots aren't too large. A 2 litre bottle may also be used.
- Cut the bottle approximately 3" from the bottom.
- Wrap the roots in a very wet paper towel.
- Wrap plastic wrap snuggly around the paper towel.
- Place in the bottom of the bottle. If it isn't snug, stuff in a piece of paper towel so it stays in when tipped.
- Pull the leaves up and place the top of the bottle on. The top will slide over the bottom to adjust to the height of the plant.
- Label the plant for your friend. I also include any planting information I have learned about the plant.
- Always ship live plants priorty (2 day) mail so they arrive in the best condition. Avoid shipping in extremely hot or cold weather.

Depends on the plant size
If it is small enough - or can be trimmed a little, you could do the same thing using a 2 liter bottle.
Otherwise, wrap the roots in damp paper towels and newspaper, wrap (roots only) in plastic - I like Press & Seal - or a baggie, carefully wrap all in newspaper to keep the plant from shifting & breaking leaves in shipment. Carefully MARK the plant with name, culture info, place in a box, fill in any loose spaces with bubble wrap, newspaper or peanuts - to keep the plant steady.
Always - Include a note with your user id & what you are sending.
Mark the box "this end up" if needed, tape shut, address & send Priority Mail.
