Feeders with bee guards are great to supplement flower nectar, especially if you have a red flower nearby that the hummers don't find delectable.

Boil 4 cups water, turn off heat, mix & stir until melted 1 cup sugar. Let cool completely, then fill your feeders. Keep your feeders washed & scrubbed out everytime you fill them, so bacteria doesn't grow.

Left over hummer nectar can be kept in the fridge for a week. Mine go through it so quickly in the summer that I end up making a new batch about every 2 days. And that's with loading 3 or 4 feeders!

Agastache (Hyssop or hummingbird mint) is another attractor. I have found that hummers around me love hibiscus.... Another big one is Pentstemmon. Salvia attracts hummers, Cardinal climber attracts hummers; trumpet vine or honeysuckle attracts hummers. The truth about red is not that it's the red that attracts hummingbirds, but more that it is something that repels bees. The main things to consider in looking for plants that attract hummers is the shape of the flowers and the nectar content of the flower. Although nectar isn't the main nutrition source for hummingbirds, (they do eat insects,) it's a good energy source for them...I have found that around the time when they are beginning to migrate south, and they do stay around here well into October or sometimes even November......is that they will feed from feeders much more frequently. Flowers that are tubular or trumpet shaped are ideal for hummingbirds because they can stick their beak in and sip away......

I have a question... I never heard of Humming Bird Mint.. Will it grow in zone4/5 ? What does it look like? I would love to get some if it's hardy in my zone.. Or can I plant it as an annual?? Does it flower?
