Our first Plumeria seedling!!!!!!
Submitted by Chellflower on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 10:34
Hi y'all,
Our very first Plumie seedling has sprouted in the Hydro !!!! It's of the 'Brittney' variety (white with yellowthroat and pink petal edges). I'm so thrilled - this is the first Plumie I've ever sprouted from seed !!!
I had turned off the air pump after a couple of days to let the pots drain a bit. I think I'm going to keep altnernating this way with a couple days air/water flow & a couple without and see how it goes...
Once the Plumie has grown a little, I'll transplant it in a pot - I think Hydro may be too moist for growing them in....don't want to take any chances with it.

Plumie Update
Wooohoooo!!! We have 16 Plumies so far in hydro!!!
Abigail- 5 of 5; Brittney- 2 of 3; Francoise -3 of 3; Chompoo Pann - 1 of 3; M. H. Eggenburger- 1 of 5; Thai Mix- 3 of 5; Chompoo Wang- 1 of 5...... also Datura Black Metel- 1 of 3.....
No sprouts yet in reservoir #2 yet, but lets keep hoping! I think I'm gonna turn the pump back on today, the grow medium is beginning to dry out a bit....

Great Growing, Chell!!!
Hey Chell!
Wow, g-friend you've been busy! I'm so impressed with your Plummie seed germination rate! I'm really anxious to get mine started, and see if I can sprout them. Thanks for sharing all about your hydro-technique; it's very interesting. I'll be using the domed mini greenhouse again. Will let you know as I make progress.

Many more Plumie sprouts!!!
Wow!! This morning we had 2 more sprouts, and as the day went by even more emerged!
Here's our total this evening: Brittney - 2; Abigail- 5 (out of 5!); Francoise - 3 (out of 3!); Thai Mix- 1.
All of the remaining seeds give resistance when I tug on the wings, so they have roots already. Some have green showing at the 'soil' level = more sprouts by tomorrow. Looks like we may have 100% germination rate folks !!!
I'm sooo excited. At this rate, I'll have a tropical 'Plumie' jungle in no time! I really need to get a greenhouse!

Thanks Susan...I was unsure
Thanks Susan...I was unsure they would sprout - after 'plumping' the seeds, I planted them in the hydro pots but a few days passed before I got the nutrient solution mix in the system and set it up (I was busy distilling the water myself).
I was worried that the seeds had dried out again, but in nature they probably 'plump' and dry a few times in between rains, before actually sprouting. Two seedlings in one day looks pretty promising to me - Keep your fingers crossed!
I'll try to post photos soon.
BTW, I also started more Plumie seeds today using the foam method you described (I used 'floral' foam -hope that was correct type). Hope to see results within a week.....

You know, I thought you
You know, I thought you weren't supposed to use Distilled Water with hydro systems! It takes all the minerals out of the water. The only problem with the water is that it's obviously got a lot of calcium and lime, but that could be beneficial. I don't know how long the seeds will take to sprout. Do you have a sort of water fall type thing that is constantly keepign the roots wet?

If I recall correctly, most
If I recall correctly, most of the Hydro sites I researched recommended Distilled water -but I'm not sure -you add nutrients with your fertilizers.
The fertilizer I use requires distilled water, being that its an 'organic' type, and tap water may have impurities that would defeat the organic qualities. It's also a 'complete' fertilizer - provides all nutrients, except Magnesium, which I easily add with Epsom salts.
I read somewhere that Plumie seeds generally take about three days to sprout (once plumped), sounds about right going by the sprouting time of mine in hydro.
The hydro seedpots have holes in the bottom and the water level is just above these holes. The air pump also keeps the water circulating, keeping the growing medium moist, which is why I've started alternating with/without the pump on since planting Plumies...
