Mystery bush?

Does anyone have an idea what this is? It is a shrub htat has no leaves in the winter and blooms these pale red flowers starting in Dec. through spring here in zone 9. In the summer it has no bllom but has shiney green leaves. It also has 1-2 in thorns all over it.

I grew up with these in my Mom's back yard ...it was my job to prune them each year....They made me itch so badly...but is a good memory now...Now I have the hawthorn in my yard...and boy the thrones are almost deadly.....Glad I could help you ID it..

I agree...
That is definitely a flowering quince....it is in the japonica family...
