My favorite! Cup and Saucer Vine

Submitted by Lavender2 on Thu, 10/04/2007 - 21:45
My favorite vine this year is Cup and Saucer Vine, Cobaea scandens.
I started the vine indoors April 15th (MN -zone 5). It is an annual here and has grown to 18-20 ft.
Unbelievable beautiful flowers!
It has also made it through a frost or two and still looks great in October!
That's a big plus, living in MN!
A must for me to grow every year now.
That cup and saucer vine is
That cup and saucer vine is beautiful. I'll bet it would do great in zone 7. I'll have to remember it when I plant seed in the spring. Is that a good time to start or does it need to be started indoors earlier?

Dixiegirl,,,It's recommended
Dixiegirl,,,It's recommended to start them inside, 2-3 weeks before last frost date. They did take quite a while to bloom. But they have made through a few Oct. frosts and are still blooming. You're right,,,they should do great in your zone!

Susan ~ The flowers start
Susan ~ The flowers start out green and turn to purple. They stay open all the time and seem to last about 4-5 days after they turn purple! I love 'em! ,,,and I'm potting one up to try to overwinter inside. I'll try anything! hehe

Micki, it's always like
Micki, it's always like that for fall around here. The leaves don't start turning here until around Thanksgiving -- if then. It's actually been warm enough to go swimming on Christmas here....but it doesn't surprise us if we have to have the a/c on on Thanksgiving! hehehe Welcome to the world of Global Warming, I guess. I love the warm weather. Summer is my favorite....The more flowers that are blooming, the better. The more hummers around, the better...and then of course there is swimming! I like it warm/hot, but not so hot that you can't swim laps without having difficulty breathing because of the heat....that's a bit much! I am no winter loving person. The main thing I like about fall -- other than the colors of course, are the apples...I love to make home made soups in the fall, too! It's too hot to be eating that sort of stuff here.

It is still in the 90's
It is still in the 90's here. I am afraid that we are going to skip fall again here and go from summer...straight to winter. Fall is my favorite season, I will be disappointed. We had thanksgiving dinner on the patio last year....with all that cooking and all those people...the house was way too hot. The men just picked up all the tables and moved them outside. It was a gorgeous day, but didn't feel anything like Thanksgiving.

Connie, my mom in Chicago
Connie, my mom in Chicago said it was very warm there this weekend. Here in Texas it was in the middle 90's and the low temperatures, or the lowest low have been in the lower 70's. If we get a cool down, I don't expect it would be anything below the middle 80's. At this rate, I will be lucky if I can turn off the air conditioning by Thanksgiving!

Connie, is it already
Connie, is it already getting cold there? We've had 90+ degree temperatures pretty consistently. Normal around here for this time of year is the mid 80's I think!
