My Raised Beds

grannyrose's picture
I just came inside from finishing up planting my veggie garden.  I have them in raised beds, I had built in the fall.  I have planted cucumbers (burpless hybred,) tomatoes(6 Celebrities, and a couple others, Red and green bell pepper and I have green onions about 4 inches high.  I am going to plant some red onions and okra.  I don't have room for anything else unless I plant containers. I have tomatoes in containers and Yellow bell peppers.  I also palnted  several irises, hostas and a Lily of the Nile today in my new beds.  I still have lots of plants I put in containers (12 pots) and more to go in the beds.  I will take pics later as I had to come in.  I got my cast wet and I am not suppose to. Oh well, too late now.   Dorothy

That is a great

garden Randy.  It is my dream to one day move to a place shaded by my favorite trees and flower and veggie gardens where I can grow all the things I love. My two raised beds are 4X4 and I am trying to figure how I can add on to them without cutting the phone lines crossing my yard.

I think I will be growing my spinach and bush beans in a container and will be making hills next to my fence for my Muskmelon and Sugarbaby watermelon.  I just want to see if I can grow them if I can then next year I will have a raised bed for them.  I want to grown some purplehull peas but not sure where.

I would think those melons

I would think those melons would do great down there.  I only do one container, sort of.  We can buy wine barrels that have been cut in half and I have three of them on the back porch.  One of them has mint in it and I just ignore that one except for watering when the rains stop.  Another one has some herbs in it, but I never use any of them.  Fiona assures me that she does though, so it stays in place.  The one that I plant each year has a tomato cage more or less permanently in place and I put a new plant in there each year.  Last year I put a Celebrity in there but I was late and we never got a ripe tomato.  Other years, I have planted Sungold (cherry tomato) and they have done well.  It's primarily for grazing as we pass by the plant.  I think these half barrels hold about 25 gallons of soil.  I know they are too heavy to move around easily.

I had thgree nice raised

I had thgree nice raised beds at the last house we lived in, but had to leave them behind, of course.  But I have such a much nicer garden area than I had there that I am not complaining.  The garden area I have now is about 4 times the size that I had before.  It's about 1700 square feet with great solar exposure.  The south edge of the garden is shaded a little from the fruit trees in the orchard right next to the garden.  I just planted a couple of rows of spinach there as it does well if it's not so warm.  The ground is still pretty cool out there though and it was raining again today.  We may have made it up to 60 degrees today.
