How many varieties of salvia are there?

Last night, I was watching the news and heard that there is discussion of making Salvia illegal in Texas. I realize that it's an herb, but there must be many varieties. I'm wondering whether all of the varieties of salvia have the potential to be used as a hallucinogen or if it's just SALVIA DIVINORUM (translated as Salvias of the divines) and I wonder whether states will word their laws in such a way that folks like me who happen to like Salvia -- particularly Coral Nymph Salvia for it's appeal to hummingbirds -- can grow at least SOME varieties to attract hummingbirds anda butterflies.
The lengths that people go to to use turn seemingly innocent plants or other materials into potentially illegal drugs never ceases to amaze me!

teach wisdom
I meant Latebloomer not lavender guess I should read more carefully before posting. Sorry
Teach Wisdom
Yes Lavender - best that we teach wisdom. "Big Brother is Watching you" era is finally here. So many wonderful purposes for herbs. Maybe someone on site has herb wisdom and could do a weekly subject of a particular herb, its uses etc. I was not aware of salvia or its uses until reading here.
If they were to ban all salvia
we would never be able to use a smudge pot to send prayers with white sage, hair care and natural eye care would be out because we wouldn't be able to grow clary, sage blossom honey would be no more, chia pets would be illegal, and we could all go to jail over turkey and stuffing!
Diviner's sage was used for indigenous spiritual ceremonies. The word sage means "wisdom". Trouble arose when this "sacred herb" started being used for its hallucinogen effect.
If they intend to ban all herbs and plants that can produce mind altering effects we will find ourselves in a stark if not dying environment. Better we should teach wisdom.
lots of news
i just put in a search and found lots of info on the internt ,,,,,wow I never knew.
It is believed to be an herb
It is believed to be an herb with hallucinogenic properties. So far, in the U.S., Louisiana, Delaware and Missouri have actually banned it. Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Texas have all proposed legislation to ban it...meaning you cannot grow or possess it. I'm sure that Texas will pass legislation banning it as soon as a bill hits the state congress. Other countries including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Spain, and Sweden all have some form of control regarding the substance, with Australia having the strictest laws. This isn't the variety I care about............I'd hate not to be able to grow Coral Nymph Salvia or other varieties that attract hummingbirds. All I care about is the flowers -- because they encourage hummers to come to my area.

changes
Susan, I do remember reading about one state (can't remember which one), that passed legislation banning salvia, but they then pulled the law and changed the wording to include only this type. Thank goodness!
I love growing coral nymph and MANY other types of salvia for the bees and hummers. Loads of hummers were out there enjoying them today!
salvia
I remembered a thread that Dale started about this back in spring. Here's more information about salvia divinorum... Salvia
If the link doesn't work, you can use the site search feature : salvia divinorum... and it will find it for you.
Salvia....
Why do they want to ban it....what do they do with it?
