Heat Wave

Apparently we are going to skip Spring entirely and just go straight into summer!

Temps today were in the 90's and triple digits are predicted for the next few days.

I don't do heat very well at all. My step-sis calls me the "Vampire Gardener". Now I'm not sure if it refers to me gardening late in the evening (because I avoid the heat) or if its the fact that I seem to be dessert for mosquitos. I just bought some mosquito repellant that swears its non-sticky and plan to try it soon.

To get out of the heat I went to do my big shopping at the warehouse store. They are rationing the amount of rice you can buy here in California. I'm not sure what to make of this since we are one of the biggest rice producers in the country. I wonder where all that rice is going.

The price of flour also went way up. I used to get a 25 pound sack for six dollars. This time it was $8.88 making me wish I had the knowledge and space to grow wheat. I'm pretty sure the prices are reflecting the price of fuel. We paid $4.12 per gallon today. I'm curious at what prices are in other states.

So if you have a cool breeze, send it my way. The chickens are panting and I've peeled off every piece of clothing of which I can decently be rid.

Be careful!

As someone who has experienced the most serious heat related illness (heat stroke,) I'm urging you to be careful. Go out early in the morning.....If you have to be out during the day, carry water with you -- or something like Propel...Some folks like Gatorade, but it has too much sodium in it for me.

Rice rationing is happening all over the country. The two biggest rice producing states are CA and LA. I can't tell you why they are rationing it, although I suspect we may be importing some of it.

As for the cost of flour, I heard some organic baker (who coincidentally lives in the same town in Western Massachusetts that my brother lives in,) speaking on CNN's early morning news one morning. He buys organic wheat flower. He said that the cost of his flour had tripled since January, and that he had taken a patch of land out in front of his bakery (which is in a home converted into a business,) and started growing wheat there. He has little bags of wheat berries and is passing them out to his customers. I guess he's hoping that he can create a coop with the wheat farmers.

We've had warm temperatures like that, and I'm sure we'll be getting plenty more....that's just the nature of Texas summers. As long as we get some good rain, then that heat isn't so bad.

Be sure you heed the warnings your body sends you.

Incidentally, this may be nuts, but I found these bracelets inexpensively at Harbor Freight tools. They are plastic snap on bracelets that are infused with citronella. I wear them on my wrists and ankles when I'm outside....I hope they help, because I'm not dessert for mosquitoes: I'm breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert AND snacks! I get bitten in my own house, too!

You are not alone about gardening late in the evening. I also have to avoid all that heat. I go out early morns like at 7 and then late in the evening to work outside in my lovely flowers. We all have to be careful in this heat.
