Fall

Well I think I am pretty good ready for fall and then winter. I have put out 6 truckload of pienstraw this week. I also have transplanted some things I had in pots to the outside ground this fall. I also collected some more seeds from some of my plants that are still blooming and producing seeds for me so I will have more to share with my friends. I want work outside in the yard today we are getting a big rain storm started raining last night and still raining hard here in Georgia. Which we need the rain cause we are still pretty dry here. Still waiting to hear from everyone what you have done for fall.

I havent really done anything

I havent really done anything yet. There are some rows in the garden I could pull up the irrigation soakers and get them stored. I'm still picking carrots and beets from the garden. I did shut off the water to the barn and blow the pipes out with air so we won't break any through the winter. We had not had a frost yet before we left last week. It's hard to think much about frost when our daytime temperatures are in the 80's here at Granite Bay.

Randy

I hear you about your temps being in the 80s we have a high temp of 50s today with over 2 inches of rain here in Georgia. And alot of wind to go with the rain. So we are getting little cool here now.

Getting Ready For Fall?

Well today I am transplanted a few things outside from pots. I also have another truckload of pinestraw to put out around my lovelies to protect them. It also makes the beds look nice and neat. Did I mention that is was FREE pinstraw it doesn't get any better than FREE pinestraw. Cause pinestraw can be quite expensive if you have to purchase it. A dear friend of mine raked it up and I drove just about a mile to pick it up. So I will be working outside with pinestraw again today. Everyone continue to share with us what you are doing for fall preparing outside.

I collected

some Yelloween Orienpet seeds this morning, just in time the pods were bursting open. I have those drying and I will plant some cannas that I had growing in containers for a couple of years. Pot some more cannas jasmine, white ROS and Willow from Gloria. I hope I have time to get the compost/manure into my raised garden beds. I planted some but have more hollyhocks to plant. I want to take more hibiscus cutting to put in the nursery I can only work a hour or so at the most like Dizzy, my aching foot and ankle are slowing me down. I got an injection in my ankle on Wednesday and will see the doctor about my foot soon. My gardener cut the grass and cleaned up all the cannas I had cut back last week. He keeps my yard looking great.

Work, work, work!

Whew! This has been a banner year for cosmos at my house! LOL! Just finished collecting the last seeds this morning then trimming back the humongeous cosmos plants (some of those stalks were about an inch around!!) - lifted all the tender bulbs, planted 5 new peonies & some asistic lillies, still moving perennials I had in planters to beds. LOTS more of that to do, (next year, only annuals in planters!!) - but my aching foot only allows me to do a bit at a time right now. Having to go to physical therapy 3 times a week too. Ouch! Sure hope I can avoid surgery. Still have seeds to collect from hardy white hibiscus and a few marigolds, but that's about it for seeds. I'm worn out & it's not even noon!

Fall Chores

Well, there are lots of things that need doing in the fall: 1) I just turned my compost pile a few weeks ago and added some more lime powder to it. 2) I just planted a bunch of hyacinth bulbs and have a bunch of allium (purple sensation) to plant yet. 3) I need to get about 20 bales of pine straw and think about putting it down soon. I have at least another month before I have to have that done. 4) I pulled up a bunch of Black Magic EE pups and have them soaking in water. 5) I have a bunch of Daylily seeds in water/baggies starting to sprout. As soon as they really get going, then I will get them potted up. I have about a month of outside growing time before I have to bring them in. 6) My Hubby needs to reseed the lawn and spread the weed control products. (At least he has one thing to do LOL!) 7) I need to dig my last live plant trades of the season this weekend and move around any plants that need relocating. 8) I also need to trim back all my hedges and get the dead wood off and cut the bulky ones down to ground so I'll have full fresh growth in the spring. My hubby wants to move some to the back yard and let me pick out new fancy ones for the front yard. He won't get any arguments there! :) 9) I have already potted up about 6 perennial flowers that I won off of Ebay. Since I could not decide where to put them and they were only about 4 inch pots, I'm just gonna let them grow a season before I put them in the ground. That way the roots get well developed and have less chance of dying on me. I'll just bring them in when it gets too cold for them. Well, that is all that I can think of that needs doing or that I have done recently. I'm sure I'll think of odd jobs and things to organize (like my craft room..Ugh :( Don't want to think about that). As we all know, the list never ends. It just looks different every time you glance at it! :)Char

I haven't really done

I haven't really done anything yet. It's about time to shut the water off to the barn though and blow out the pipes to keep them from breaking. We had rain off and on today, so it could be the advent of our wet season.

Fall

I have finished trimming the shrubs and trees that I needed to prune for fall. I planted 2 purple mums, and daffodil bulbs, I planted some cannas also, and crosomia bulbs. I have pulled a few more weeds out of the flower bed so that I could have it weedfree when winter hits and kills grasses back. Waiting to hear what all you have done for fall in your yard and flower gardens.

Fall

Today I planted 4 Brugs that I rooted in water in nice pots with potting soil. I pulled lots of weeds out of one of my flower beds trying to get them all removed before I start planting more bulbs. I also planted a few bulbs today. I also did some fall cleaning in my closet today too. Trying to get my fall and winter shoes easier to get too and put all the flip flops up until next spring time.

I am...

Collecting lots of seeds everyday. Trimming back any plants in need. Moving a few things that were planted in the wrong place this spring. Doing a (hopefully) final weeding for the year. Haven't started planting bulbs just yet, will probably wait until next month. Fall is a wonderfull time with the cool temps, although it is sad to be putting all the flowers to bed for the winter. But spring is just a few months away!

Fall work

So much to do! Been collecting seeds EVERY day! Gonna have to send Lav2 a large packet for the new member envelopes! Still enjoying many blooms - unusual for me since we usually have a hard freeze just after Labor Day that ends the blooms. Planted a Red Freedom Rose of Sharon, Neon & Pink Petticoats hardy geraniums, firecracker bulbs, Red Rocket & Woodstock hyacinth bulbs, and a double red peony today. Have a Gardenia peony & a double white peony to plant as soon as the annuals stop blooming in the bed where I want them. LOL! (Got that Gardenia from Gilber H Wild for $9!!!!) And I plan to put down worm castings this year in most of my beds. Have to lift some bulbs, like dahlias, EEs and begonias & store them for the winter (or trade them). Still have a few other spring bulbs & things on their way. And the task list goes on & on......

I too have been saving seeds,

I too have been saving seeds, cleaning out the flower beds, pulling weeds planting bulbs, cleaning grass out of the beds. I worked so much yesterday that my hands hurt this mornings. That is a good sign that I'm getting old.lol
grannyrose's picture

My flower beds

were pretty much weed free this year, so less work there for me to do. I do need to get some trades finished in the next couple of weeks and get the EE's I have been growing in water out. I counted about 25 Aloe veras in a pot that needs to be repotted. I rooted some Pothos and a Christmas cactus and an Angel Trumpet in water. I need to wash some pots and plastic drink containers I had for wintersowing. Come to think of it, I didn't see them yesterday. I think Antonio the gardener picked them up when cleaning the yard. I had a hard time going to sleep last night, so I got up and wrote down the seeds I want to wintersow.

Fall Jobs

Fall is the time of year when wildflower gardens tend to look very neglected. Many plants get top heavy, and fall over & as the plant dries up to brown, it looks ugly among the green ones that are still blooming. Grass is still rampant, especially after the good watering Gustav gave it. Soooo, 1. I've been pulling up dried flower plants, and shaking the seeds that I haven't already collected over the garden in various place. 2. I've been taking sections of the gardens, and pulling out every bit of grass or spurge, etc I can find. It's not nearly as overgrown as it usually is in the fall. (not so far, at least)! LOL 3. I'm spraying each cleaned section with a new product for me called 'Soil Syrup', it's advertised as a soil rejuvenator, aerates, adds nutrients, & adds organic matter! http://www.megagro.com/soilsyrup.htm?source=soilsyrup&gclid=CI7ruYeP7pUCFQ4hnAodcVMvew (my hyperlink symbol is missing so I hope this will work; if not Google for the product. 3. I'm hoping for a lot of results from this simply because I am not physically able to spread humus, manure, or compost. 4. My Clematis is blooming again, over a mass of dead vines, so when it finishes, I plan to get the old vines out, so new spring growth can flourish. 5. I, too, am collecting seeds as I can, and have just brought in some Butterfly Weed in red, orange, and pumpkin yellow. Also, more JMG seeds, and the vines are literally loaded. They have gotten mixed though by the vines interlacing, so the only color I'm sure I have seed for is Blue Silk which has a tan seed. If anyone wants seeds in the shell, contact me through the site contact link. I do so hate to see them ruin on the vine! I've cleaned and bagged all I want. I found three heads of clematis seed fluffy & overflowing with a tiny seed at the end of each filament of fluff, so I gathered those; on and on and on! 6. The Artemesia, Hardy Ageratum, Prince's Feathers, and other fall blooms are being made into bouquets to decorate inside for a 'touch o' fall'. 7. I've also been emptying soil out of flower pots into a pan to mix with fresh potting soil and perlite for seed starting soil, or rooting cuttings. Whew! That's about it for now!

I have way

too much to do! Just harvested sunflower, basil, yarrow, dill, and garlic chive seeds. I got a pair of homing pigeons and am setting up their cage. I need to build them a nest box. I'm enlarging the chicken enclosure. I need to start raking leaves. I've trimmed off all the dead stuff out of the garden and now need to put in the kale, chard and spinach. I also nabbed an old satellite dish and am turning it into an aviary. I really do love fall. I get much more done!

I'm in the process of harvesting seeds as they ripen. I dug up some of my Elephant Ear pups and have them in water. I took some more cuttings of night blooming jasmine and maple leaf hibiscus and am rooting them. I'm also rooting some pathos, philodendron and small leaf wandering Jew. I've gathered pots I'm not using and emptied them....I am going to wash them in the dishwasher.

It's about time to save clear milk jugs for wintersowing!

I will start different seeds right after Christmas in MG soil in much like greenhouse conditions in different containers. Makes the plants hearty. Going to try grapes and peaches this year. sharon tnchatter

milk jugs

I have started saving milk jugs and plastic drink bottles to wintersow in this year. This will be my first attempt at wintersowing and Im really excited about it.

This is my first

year wintersowing also and I have saved lots of plastic containers. I have gotten the bug growing seeds. I have pretty good luck so I am going to do it. When I have time I still need to take cuttings from some of my plants and get Antonio my gardener to prune lots of my plants that the wind from Ike shredded. I also need to thin my cannas and a few other plants. Grannyrose.

I've been emptying all the

I've been emptying all the containers that I grew veggies and annuals in and dumping the dirt by my shed and planting the roots, etc of plants that broke off when I was potting plants for sale. Some have sprouted. Going to plant all the pots that I didn't sell for the winter there too. Got to get someone to finish stacking the wood and once it's gets cold to bring some inside the cellar for the winter. I've been cutting my perennials back little by little. Got to get the fence around my rhodies and azeleas before the ground freezes so the deer won't eat them this winter. Going to rent a bulldozer and my nephew and brother are going to bulldoze my back yard. Not sure I want it grassed in as I have enough lawn to mow now. Maybe ground grover but it will take a lot to fill in the back yard. Got to dig up the dahlias, glads and other stuff for the winter. I'm tired now just thinking of everything that needs to be done. I've been working at it little by little.

Well I haven't done much getting ready for fall.  Will cross that bridge later closer to first frost--mid late October.  Was planning to have a fall vegetable garden but it is just too too wet here in Florence SC.  Alot of my flowers I don't bring in just start again next spring.  Dale

Let's see........

I am taking a lot of cuttings -- particularly from my Red Maple Leaf Hibiscus -- although I brought it inside for the winter because it's not hardy below about zone 10.I've also taken cuttings of my night blooming jasmine.

I'm also harvesting seeds as I can -- and am waiting to harvest seeds from the night blooming jasmine. I'll have to start organizing my seeds soon.

I've been repotting some plants that seem to have over grown their pots, and I've been taking pups from my EE's hoping to pot them or keep them in water.

I've also been cleaning my patio, washing pots and packing some of them away.

My Russian Red cannas grew to about ten or twelve feet tall, and I'm thinking that I might have to do some divisions soon. But I'm leaving town a week from Tuesday and won't be back until the 15th of October. The foliage on the Russian Reds is very nice for fall, and they sure have provided us with some privacy in our office bedroom.....Without them, our neighbors can see straight into the room.
