Printer-friendly versionThe GardenHere Gourd Society welcomes any member of GH who is interested in growing gourds to be used as birdhouses, as decorative objects in the home, or as gifts. Plus, to engage in a learning experience. Our united mission is to learn to grow healthy, well shaped gourds; when to harvest them; how to dry them; and how to decorate them. There are unlimited resources online to help us with this. We shall each agree go be helpful to each other by sharing tips, asking beneficial questions, and making suggestions that might make our effort more successful. Please post all your gourd stuff in this thread!! We shall not be in competition with each other, as each person has his own talent, and their work is uniquely theirs, and has it's own originality and beauty. We shall be supportive, and complimentary of each other. I've tried to say what I think each of you sees as the object of group. It's all about fun! Relaxation! Creativity! Should you not want to wait until you grow, harvest, and prepare gourds to the painting stage, I've found a site, after looking at many, that offers them for sale at very good prices. http://www.foothillsfarm.com/egourds/index.htm Will all members sign up by replying to this post. I hope to see some new names each day! maw President, GHGS

Gourds & Me..question.

I received 25 gourds from a freecycling friend. Many sizes of mexican bottle & a few small dippers. Dried & ready to start crafting, after cleaning process. Will work on a few at a time. Making a list of what supplies/paint colors to gather and trying to come up w/ ideas for decorating gourds. . . . . . . . Will the other gourds be Ok stored in the shed?. . . . . . Anyone have gourd projects planned for winter? . . . Looks like my marble "gazing balls" has become 2nd to GHGS. . Thank Annette for the info..I am using it all =) SandiB
mawnature's picture

Yay for Gourdhead SandiB!!

That sounds like a wonderful box of gourds, Sandi!! Your gourds will keep just fine stored in the shed. Don't worry if they happen to mildew even more, as that will come off when you clean them. Clean them as you get ready to use them. I'm glad the info I posted is coming in handy for you...let the GHGS know if you have any unanswered questions! And keep us posted as you progress. Of course, pictures will be expected! LOL

Me!

I would like to be a gourdhead too! I have not grown gourds yet. I wanted to this year, but didn't get any started. I have a smaller veggie garden, so tips or tricks for growing them in a smaller garden would be great. Also any variety suggestions. I really like the smaller ones with warts and wrinkles. All the odd ones!
mawnature's picture

Poppylover....

...Welcome to the GHGS!! Do you have a fence your gourds could run on? I read where one man who has an old trailer just sticks gourd seeds in the ground around it...didn't sound like he even clears the grass off. The vines run all over the trailer, and from about 6-8 seeds he usually gets 30 to 40 gourds. Also, you can grow them like cucumbers on a row, but they are hard to control, and the gourds need sand or straw under them to prevent rotting or scarring from touching the ground. A trellis away from your garden would work...less cross pollination with cukes and squash! The smaller ones with warts are pretty for fall decor in the home. I grew those one year, and they are fun, too, but are not hard shelled like the birdhouse gourds are. They won't keep indefinitely. Good luck with whatever type you decide on!!

Nope..

I do not have a fence or a trellis..a new project for hubby! I definetly don't want to grow them in rows, I grew bush cukes for the first time this year and they roamed way out of there area. And the were a bush variety! Hate to see what a nonbush type would do to my garden! I bought a bunch of the smaller ones last year and tried to dry them with no success. I have never successfully dried a gourd.
mawnature's picture

Drying smaller gourds....

....depends on the type gourd they are. Ornamental gourds with the bumps, wings, two-tone colors, etc. are soft shell gourds, and WILL NOT DRY! This was a disappointment to me too, as I grew some and wanted so badly to preserve them. I know I didn't leave mine on the vines until the stem turned brown, and the vines died. Maybe this would have allowed them to dry, and keep?? This website says "NO"! Jen, if you have your heart set on these little cuties, then grow them and enjoy them through the Autumn season, but you won't be able to preserve them according to this discussion. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/gourds /msg091256505970.html I also found this on drying ornamental gourds... "The brightly colored ornamental gourds can be harvested once their stem turns brown and the tendrils next to the stem dry. Ornamental gourds will develop a hard, glossy, brightly colored shell. To preserve the color of ornamental gourds, they can be washed in a solution of one-cup borax with three cups water. After curing, ornamental gourds can be rubbed with a water base wax." Maybe you can dry them after all!! Good luck, Jen!!

Important question....

If cheese heads root for the Green Bay Packers, then what team do the gourdheads cheer for?

"Business...Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance and benevolence were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"

mawnature's picture

Answer to Important Question....

That's a good question, Wes....Do you have a team of choice in mind for this? We could go with one from a state that's famous for growing gourds....like Pennsylvania! So, how 'bout the Pittsburgh Steelers? Indiana is also famous for its gourd farms....soooo, we could cheer for the Indianapolis Colts!! What do you think????????? Any preference? We'll leave it up to you to choose between these two teams since you asked the question! LOL maw

Glad to have you as part of the GHGS charter group!! Please let us know if you've ever grown gourds, if so what kind. If not, do you know what kind you're interested in growing? I have a ton of seeds from open pollinated birdhouse gourds that I grew last year. They are listed at my trade list. maw

I've always wanted to grow gourds but I forget to start them!

I'm hoping my fellow gourdheads will get me to thinking about it. Our season is so short,I'm going to have to start them indoors. I've always wanted to grow egg and bushel gourds.
mawnature's picture

YAY! That's two kinds....

....no one else has chosen to grow at this time! That will add so much interest to our group. Do you have specific uses planned for them? maw

Glad you got your seeds today! Look up on Google if they need to be chilled before they are planted. If they do, put them in a good air-tight ziplok bag, and put them in the fridge until Spring planting time. Good luck being a gourd-head!! Love, maw

already do

Every year Ann and I usually try something different.... while we don't do much of our own painting or carving, we do dry em and clean em up to enjoy their natureal patina. We also give many dried ones away to friends who do paint and sell em. Occasionally one comes back... will try to get some pics. Didn't plant any this year but we ahad a couple volunteer vines in the corn patch. Next year I was thinkin I'd like to try a hill or two of long handled dippers. Got any seed?
