I'd like to show everyone my Fringe tree, Fringe Tree, Chionanthus virginicus: Flowers of FringeTreeFringe Tree, Chionanthus virginicus: Flowers of FringeTreeChionanthus Virginicus, also known as Grancy Graybeard and Old Man's Beard, it's considered to be one of natures most beautiful and showy native trees. It grows hardy in zones 4-9 and is resistant to mosts pests. It has glossy green leaves and snow white flower panicles flowing from it's branches. I have 2 in my landscape that I dug from the woods and brought home to be a part of my collection of flowering trees. The Fringe tree is a very slow grower and averages a growth of about 15-20 foot but can grow taller, although finding one over 15 foot is fairly unusual. It averages growing about 6 inches per year. In zone 9 they can be found abundant in some areas.

I am told that you need a female and a male tree planted near each other in order to see the wonderful blooming display it makes in the Spring, the male showing the best of the blooms, so I take it that I have a pair. Both my trees are in full bloom now and are absolutely gorgeous thou one is fuller and more showy so I believe it to be the male. The picture is of one I've had about ten years and is about seven foot tall.

Lovely tree. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I have ever seen this type of tree. But I do like it. It looks awesome.

Tree search

Dorothy, I'll do my best to find you one too and I'll try rooting some cuttings. I've never tried that but now is good time to see if it will root from cuttings.

Part shade?

Thanks Gloria!

Do you know how they would do in part shade?  We're replacing a tree for my mom and she wants something that doesn't get real large, but it would get some shade from an elm tree. I would look for a larger tree for her at a nursery since they grow slow. But, if you run across an extra for me, I'd be thrilled!

Sun

Connie, I think it would be ok as they grow wild here in wooded areas. One of mine is in part shade, the other in full sun.
