I started out for a Christmas evening at my in laws house. As I sat down to put on my shoes and tie them, I could hardly reach them and do the simple task of tying my shoe, short on breath from a simple task, I said I’ve had enough. After all those years of eating what the kids eat, pizza, hotdogs, mac & cheese, soda, chips and ice cream, I decided to lose weight. I wore a woman’s size 16. Had to start out with 5 minutes on an exercise bike, everyday and soon was able to increase my time. The following summer I started walking, every where I could. Then I added in jogging with the walking, kids said if I ran any slower I’d be going backwards, but at least I would be going somewhere. LOL, The weight was coming off, with the exercise and cutting fat, more fruit and vegs every day for me. Water played a big part also it fills you up and you eat less. I can now run 4 miles a day, and 4 weeks ago my 22 year old son introduced me to the exercise program P90X, it works all parts of the body and you really sweat. I like it lots. I now wear a 6-8 depends on the clothes and where I get them. But I have to say life is so much better and I’m able to move, my son says he has the hottest mom in town. Sure makes me feel real GOOD..

I went to the

doctor two weeks ago and I had lost 10 pounds. I need to continue becaus I have lots to lose. Try the cleansing diet Karen. It cleanses the system and you lose weight. You drink lemonade sweetened with pure maple syrup to stop the hunger pains. I will be joining a support group next Saturday for overeaters. It is free and you get lots of support. For the first two months though I will have to cut out all starches and sugars. It will be rough but I can do it.

I bought a bicycle a couple

I bought a bicycle a couple of years ago anticipating getting some exercise on that. But in 2007, I fell a couple of times. The second time I decided I would have to put the bike away. I'm not as steady as I once was. I was daydreaming yesterday while running a couple of errands and I thought about that sobriety test you see on television where you put one foot in front of the other, heel to toe. I doubt I could pass that one. LOL
sunflower3's picture

your very funny,

made me LOL, You really should try it out it may just help you to gain some extra needed strength in your legs. Even if it's only a min. a day. It could help out, just a thought. only don't move the bike yourself have someone do it for you or help you with it. Maybe a neighbor or family or friend.

We just returned to Granite

We just returned to Granite Bay last evening and I think I can get some walking done again. I haven't been on a walk since leaving on Friday morning. We will return to Oregon on Thursday and I will be able to get my exercise routine back on track when we get home.
sunflower3's picture

walking

by the bay will be lovely, in the evening with the sun setting or early in the morning with it rising. How wonderful for you ,enjoy those walks Randy.
sunflower3's picture

well it

sounds to me like everyone is doing good work. Weather it's walking, gardening, running, a treadmill, biking, just keep up the good work and some of you have even lost quit a few pounds. Which is nice to hear. so keep on moving and keep posting we need all the support we can get.

well after 5 weeks of no

well after 5 weeks of no exercise, I'm back at my P90X. But had to start from the beginning, It sure does hurt and I'm sore but I fell good, now if I can lose a few pounds I'll be all set.
sunflower3's picture

So glad

to hear everyone's stories and here how you are all moving around, and exercising in different ways. it is a great encouragement to me and the stories always make me smile to know that it is something that I have in common with others, who understand the aches and pains of everyday living. Everyone keep up the great work and keep posting I love reading them and hearing how you are all doing.I haven't had much time for exercise in five weeks but am planning on getting back at it next week no matter what. Hubby has this week off and we are weather proofing the house. : )

My knee was bothering me some

My knee was bothering me some today, so I didn't get on the treadmill, but I did walk around the property perimeter twice today. I'm going to have to figure out how far that is around the place here. I think it's at least a half mile.
sunflower3's picture

randy it

sounds to me like you are doing well if your leg hurts and your going half a mile. That should keep the joint fluid moving and hopefully you'll be back on that treadmill soon, keep up the great work.

We are down in California now

We are down in California now for about another week. I have been doing pretty well getting in some walking in the area. My wife went with me today. I was ready to sit a spell when we got back. But it does make me feel better to know that I am getting that walk in.
sunflower3's picture

good for you randy

even though we go away my hubby likes to use the gym or take walks to exercise, now if I can just get him to do that here at home.LOL

I know what you mean. I

I know what you mean. I enjoy being able to walk outdoors, but back home it rains a lot during nine months of the wet season. I hate that treadmill, but I like the results. It goes better when I can put a movie on the TV or watch a fishing show.

Exercise is good period

I am a tiny 5' 110 lb person who is diabetic, but I run at least twice a week and walk every day due to the diabetes because often my triglycerides are high and exercise really helps with that and the blood sugar. No matter how healthy I eat the exercise is so important for your whole system. Plus the fact you feel so good to know you have the ability to make change in your health and keep it all better. People sharing their stories certainly is encouragement to us all. Yes, exercise is worth the time and effort! You go girl!

Ayla, I am also diabetic and

Ayla, I am also diabetic and I concur on the exercise. I don't weigh 110 pounds though. LOL I have lost over 40 pounds since the first of the year though when I found out about the diabetes.

Another 40 lbs this year Randy!

Looks like we could start a diabetes club! I hate treadmills, much rather see nature as it passes during the runs. It is great to see everyone sharing because you know you are never the only one and at GH everyone shares - it is just wonderful to read all the comments, support and the funny stories too!

I worked

in my back yard for a little over an hour, racking, picking up trash, planting bulbs, watering all my beds. I was completely wet when I came in. I took a shower and need to get some laundry done and cook dinner. My grandson kept me company while I worked and the future photographer took pics of my plants. It is worth the time and effort.

I took a tumble about a month

I took a tumble about a month ago and injured my right knee. I went to the doctor and he sent me in to the hospital for an MRI. I had torn the cartilege in my knee, so he referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. It takes awhile to jump through all those hoops, so by the time I saw the surgeon, my knee wasn't hurting so much. The surgeon advised that we wait and see what happens and said that I could get back on the treadmill. I had stayed off it since the injury. I am back doing my mile and a half though and it does feel good to be able to get back on there and get the walking in.

I have been

in great pain for the last couple of weeks. When my rheumatoid arthristis is active I am miserable. My daughter asked me to pick her up from school on Wednesday and I did. We went to the grocery store and I was out about 3 hours. I was tired but felt so much better. The more I move the better I feel. I am still in pain today but I am going outside to rake the back yard and clean up where my dogs makes a mess. I need to throw away some broken pots, add some compost/manure to my raised beds so I can get my fall garden planted in the next week. My grandson is here so I will have help and someone to keep me company while I do my work. I will have to rest in between but I will get some exercise today with all that work.

I hear you about tumbling

when I broken my leg it took forever to get through the hoops and get it all fixed around 18 weeks. Thats the time when you add on weight. So glad you are able to get back to your walking, but take it slow and listen to your leg. When it hurts don't exercise rest it and be patient it will come with time. After 11 years I still have days were I don't exercise because my leg hurts, I ice it and relax it. This helps me get back at it the next time.

I didn't do the treadmill

I didn't do the treadmill today, but I did walk the perimeter of the property. It's a good brisk walk and the weather was a bit chilly. Our property is bordered by filbert (hazelnut) orchards on the back and both sides so I get to walk through the orchards. They harvested yesterday so the ground is pretty clean under the trees now. It won't be but just a little while though and all those leaves will be on the ground.

why did I start this link????

I started it because I know there are others just like me who need some one and some where to go to talk to and be encouraged. I check the site everyday and will try and be that someone for you. If you want to email me directly that is fine also. I just think we all need a little motivation from time to time and that hopefully will keep us on track. Lately I have not had much time to exercise as I take my son to college 38 miles away and sit in the car for 3 hours. But decide to get out of the car and walk the sidewalks and check out the shops along the way. I have found some great cloths and other items, but sitting in the car is a no, no for me. I would rather move and so I did. A big THANKS-YOU to all who have posted. Please continue and lets encourage each other to get healthy and stay health..Oh!! And Happy Gardening too!!

Oh definitely! Up until a

Oh definitely! Up until a couple of years ago I played squash 3 times a week, golf and tennis were on the list too and swam a lot. I had to cut back dramatically due to a few unwanted dramas, I miss it a lot. I also now go bushwalking which also helps clear the mind, especially in the early morning with the symphony of birdsong accompanying me....it's amazing how easily the weight comes back when you cease exercise for an extended period and still eat the same amount of food.

My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.

sunflower3's picture

I agree with walking

early in the morning. I love to see the sun just coming over the hill, it make me feel as though I'm one with the Lord. Such power in the sun rise and I always thank Him for it. There is nothing like the morning to remind us of our creator..

Just starting out

I have been in bad health because of my own habits, but now I want to be healthy and alive for my kids, I am in worse shape than my father was when he died almost 10 years ago and he was 51, I am only 33!! So I went to the doctor and now am doing some strength exercises on the couch as I watch tv and already can see a difference in the way I feel about myself. Then I found this site, and have found many ideas for my garden next year. (this was the first real garden year I have had in many years) The more I read on here the more I go outside, my husband noticed that the first 2 days I was on here. I can now walk to the stop sign and not be winded when I get back. So, over the weeks I will be posting progress to keep myself motivated and will watch for others as well. We have to stick together in the fight against bad health. And gardening is a blessing. Sarah

Sarah Married 12 years SAHM of 3 kids, 5 pets and a hubby that is like a kid sometimes ; )

Sarah, Sarah,

Sarah, You have touched me. And I am very proud of you. To have your husband see a difference in just a short time. YEAH!! for you. I know it is helping you to feel better and gives you strength. So keep up the great work. I also have to remind myself that I am doing this for myself first and then for my family, It's great to be able to play with your kids instead of sitting on the sideline all the time. My kids are all grown now but they still live with us and I enjoy swimming, running and more with each of them, even exercising with them.. Keep it up Sarah!! Your doing great.

Sarah, this forum was created

Sarah, this forum was created for that purpose. Some of us felt that since we're establishing such amazing friendships here, it might be helpful for those who were interested to take advantage of this site and all that it offers to create a venue where we could all support each other in our attempts to lose weight and get healthy. Keep up the great work. Listen to your body.....do what you feel comfortable and physically capable of doing. And we'll be here cheering you all the way and supporting you. YOU GO GIRL! Winter is a rough time for me because swimming is my exercise of choice usually. Trouble is, there's no weight bearing benefit of that. I have plenty of work out tapes and there are even work out programs on television.....Last year, my neighbors had a walking group. You might consider doing that with your friends when you feel stronger. The support of friends, family and even strangers can be a powerful motivator.

Great inspiration!

What great inspiration, tips AND accomplishment! Congrats! You should be proud... thanks for sharing your story! I think exercise is one of the easiest, and the hardest, things to do to take off weight. Easy, because it WORKS!... and hard, because it sounds so difficult. I also think that for many people it's hard to understand WHY they have a problem with their weight and why they can't change it. I was there, many years ago. Not a lot of weight, but 30 pounds of post-baby weight that was very determined to hang around. I was caring for 12 children at the time and ate the same nutritious meals that I was providing for the kids. I was very active during my 11 hour workday and THEN worked in my gardens, too. It really seemed impossible to change. I did as you did, sunflower. I started walking to the corner, a whopping 4/10 mile. Very soon I was walking to the other corner, 2 miles round trip... and soon, that wasn't enough either. I was addicted and it felt so good to jog 4 miles! In 3 months the weight was gone and I never felt better! For many reasons, whether it be weight, lack of energy, depression, or many other health reasons... our body might be telling us that it needs something more. Exercise makes a huge difference, and is very, very important for kids, too!
sunflower3's picture

Thanks Lavender for

your story. It's great to here how other have lost weight and you started out slow just like I did. It made me smile to know that I'm not alone. Exercise has made a big difference for me and feeling good is important to get us through the day. Now if I could just motivate the hubby,, LOL, that's a whole other story..

Exercise not only makes you

Exercise not only makes you feel physically great, it give you a great sense of satisfaction in having accomplished something. I've always been a swimmer...unfortunately, swimming isn't weight bearing and at the moment, I need the weight bearing exercise because of osteoporosis. I love power walking, and I do weight lifting too. I have hand weights. It's good to alternate and not do strength training every day. A 30 minute walk every day does wonders for people....it even slows the progression or onset of heart disease. My mom is 80 years old. She does Pilates three times a week. She's got more energy than a lot of 20 and 30 year olds I know -- more energy than my 17 year old niece. She has a friend who is about her age -- maybe a few years younger. This woman doesn't exercise. She's got balance issues and she also has osteoporosis. She fell recently in her bathroom, falling on her back. Fortunately she didn't break anything, but she's now so laid up that her oldest son has had to move in to care for her, and she's pretty much bed bound. If she had been exercising, she would have been stronger, had better balance and probably not have fallen. This fall may impact her quality of life for the rest of her life.....It's not a happy scenario. I sure wouldn't want to live that way. I often lack motivation....and that's my biggest obstacle. My SI joints are constantly out of alignment and it hurts something fierce....but I'm discovering that I hurt a lot less when I exercise because some movement probably pops them back into place......funny that exercise would alleviate pain more than not doing it does. You can't argue with success, though.

I hear you about the pain in

I hear you about the pain in joints, My knee kills me some days because of the arthritis in it but when I'm done exercising it feel better. And I can move around better to. Sorry about your Mom she sounds like quit the lady, doing pilates, I do those when my back hurts it seems to easy the pain and puts my back back in place. Maybe because they are simple movement. Motivation is a big thing for all of us. Most days we don't have time and when we do we are too tired to do it. But we must move it if we are to lose it...

I use the Leslie Sansone walk

I use the Leslie Sansone walk tapes they work good. You can walk in the house, she keeps you moving through the whole tape or dvd, And you don't need fancy gadgets to do it, just some sneakers and enough room to move. She has 1- 4 miles programs I started with the one mile and can now run 4 miles.. You need to cut fat, which is what I did at first to 20 grams a day and water, water every where. I ate lots of vegs and fruit, chicken & rice. I say you can't loose it if you don't move it...

I have been delinquent in

I have been delinquent in getting on the treadmill now for a couple of weeks and I can see the difference in how I feel. I took a tumble out in the garden and apparently twisted my knee. It was sufficiently painful that I bought a cane to help take the pressure off. But I have been able to walk fairly well now for a week without the cane. I did have an MRI on the knee last Wednesday and am awaiting results from the doctor. I am hoping that I can resume my treadmill time though as soon as possible. But I have lost 40 pounds since I started that last January 1.
sunflower3's picture

Sorry about

your knee and falling. I know how that can go. I broke my leg 10 years ago and that is when all my weight came on, it still gives me problems on some days, but I just keep on going and it makes it feel better and I to feel better. Congratulations on your weight lose. Keep up the good work, when it makes you feel good you tend to do it. Just don't get bored. I like to watch a movie when I use our exercise bike, the time flies by and I get the chance to watch a movie I want to see. Keep up the good work Randy.

I have done that. In the

I have done that. In the spring, fishing shows are on TV and I watched those. But when they stopped showing those I started watching about half a movie and picked up the rest of it the next time I was on the treadmill.
