Egg shells and toilet paper planters!!

I ‘ve got Spring on the brain so I thought I might share some of the stuff I am doing to get ready for planting season.
There are actually many things around the house that can be used to get seedlings started and it makes use of garbage you have around the house, effectively recycling things to give them another use.
First off…to start seedlings you need some little pots. There is no need to buy them…you may already have them. You can make little planters from toilet paper rolls, and eggshells.
To make planters from toilet paper rolls:
- Cut each roll in half and press it flat.
- Make four, half-inch to three-quarter-inch slices on one end of the roll to create four equal-sized flaps.
- Open up the roll and fold in the four little flaps like a box bottom.

- Fill with soil and plant your seeds!
You can grow these indoors next to windows (for light) or under grow lights and then when it comes time to plant them in the garden just unwrap the bottom and stick it in the ground. The paperboard of the toilet paper roll will disintegrate over time.

If you use the eggshells in

Cool Idea
That is a pretty cool idea you got there. I use toilet paper rolls sometimes when I mail a live plant to someone to protect them from breaking in shipment. Thanks for sharing this great idea with all of us. We can all use this idea if we don't already use it.

Sunflower,I borrowed this
Sunflower,I borrowed this idea but adapted it a little. My tomato plants are getting leggy, but I don't have a lot of deep pots and they would use too much soil....
So, I cut toilet paper rolls open on one side, slid them around the tomato seedling stem, retaped them back together, and added dirt into the rolls. Now i don't need deeper pots, tomato can grow new roots in the rolls, and it works as a good support too.

Great Seed-Starters!
Boy, those toilet paper rolls sure beat making pots out of newspaper! A better size too, as with the newspaper, mine were large enough that I planted more than one or two seeds, then had a problem getting them separated without disturbing the roots. I've been using my toilet paper rolls for storing electric cords in to keep them in place. Just slip the end of the folded cord up in the roll.
The egg shells are great too. I was wondering about the shell's slow decomposition rate, and how that may affect the plant's growth, but Susan answered that question for me.
Thanks for the great tips!

Brilliant.
The toilet paper idea is really neat too! You could probably do it with paper towel rolls too -- just cutting them in half! Thanks for sharing this neat idea!
