Easy Baby Quilt

Just thought I'd share an easy baby floor quilt and bag idea.

I use lightly used denim, novelty cotton fabric, and flannel for backing. Cut 6" squares.  It's best to use 1/2" seam allowance when working with denim.  The 2-3" border is fabric wrapped from backing and top stitched. (Batting is cut 2-3" larger than the top, after pinning down) I like to use 1/4" cotton batting as it's easy to work with when using denim.  Stich in the ditch for quick finishing.  Finished size is approx. 40".  The bag is also made from denim, with a border that matches the quilt. Approximately 24" by 17".

The quilt is heavy so it works great for when babys play on the floor, and the bag is large enough for the quilt and to take some toys along. A simple floor quilt you can make in a weekend.Smile   Click on the photo to enlarge.

Hi Meg

I use a sewing machine. I would like to hand stitch one sometime, but maybe when I don't have so many other things to do. It takes a very long time and lots of patience.

Great weekend

project and lovely quilt Connie. I am making something similar for my grands for Christmas. I have six to make. They like to sleep on the floor at my house when they are all together so I am making the quilt 45X60 with an 18" pillow and the bag to carry it in.

Six!

Wow, six to make before Christmas! The sewing goes quick, but the cutting seems to take forever for the larger ones. Wish I were closer to help. What a wonderful gift your grandkids will have to cherish, great idea to add a pillow, too... they will love them! Enjoy making them... post a pic if you get a chance... good luck, Dor.

I can send you

a copy of my pattern if you would like Connie.lmk I wish you were closer too, so that you can look and help me with all this fabric I have. I am sure I have only 50 bolts of drapery fabric, some upholtery fabric, lots in containers and notions galore. Yes, six is a lot but I can go down to the Community College and use their tables on Monday to do my cutting. I just have to ask the instructor ahead of time. If I get them all cut, then it won't take me long. The boys havwe footballs on the front and denin on the back and the girls will be Lavender strip with a print on the back I want to build and cover a tufted bed headboard for myself by Christmas. I am also covering six seat cushions for a customer and making some sheer cafe curtains. She saw mine and loved them. She was really serious and delivered everything to me last week along with her deposit.

Pattern...

I would love a copy of your pattern, Dor... thank you... I've been looking for a new pattern for a bedspread for my granddaughter. I'm a fabric collector too, tons!... and still have to look whenever I go out. Sounds like you will be busy, the quilts sound wonderful.

When you

have a minute email me your address. I made a comfort for my bed, my draperies and working on my dust skirt now. I made a bedspread and pillow shams for my girlfriend. When I get everything made I will decorate my bedroom. When I started taking Drapery and Bedspread making at Houston Community College back in 2000, I had to relearn everything I had learned about sewing draperies. If you are make a bedspread for your granddaughter, measure the width and length of her bed. Measure the drop. Add two times the drop to the width and add the drop to her length plus a few inches for 1/2 inch seam allowances and shrinkage if you are going to quilt or tack it. You don't want a seam to be in the middle so from the top of the mattress on each side you will sew what is needed to make it long enough. Add cording or trim to the bottom or in the seam allowances, sew your lining to it leaving an opening at the top to turn. Turn it inside out with top face down on the batting whip stitch leaving an opening at the top to turn. Turn inside out and close your opening and quilt or tack. Ribbons and buttons are pretty for a girl if she is old enough not to chew on the buttons. Standard measurement for a twin with 21" drop is 81X110 finished. 81-54 inch fabric leave 27+3 inch for seams. You can cut (1) 54 X 113 and (1) 30X113. Happy sewing. I will see if I can anything on this to send you. I know I have a scalloped edge bedspread pattern. A twin bedspread takes 8 yards per side if you use coordinating fabric for the back.

Thanks, Kym

I lost count how many of those quilts I've made. I used them a lot for daycare kids and many gifts.

I've been sewing since I was a teen, a lot! lol I started quilting about 10 years ago. My mom convinced me to do a log cabin quilt for my bed... not a good idea for a first time quilt! Believe me! It had over a thousand strips of material, something like 280 squares... ha, never again! I've made many quilts but a bit easier ones.

Wonderful!

I'm no seamstress, but Connie, I sure do love that! The little bag is wonderful too.....Now you're going to make me want to learn to sew -- or else I'll have to do stuff by hand! Thanks for sharing.....That would be really cute for my great grand daughter! (Yup, I'm a great grandma.....I fell into it!)
