When I plant my dahlias outside, I leave them during the winter months here in zone 8 and cover them good with pinestraw to keep them from freezing. But our cold here in zone 8 is milder than the northern states. If you plant dahlias and you live in a northern state where the winter is very cold, you would need to dig your dahlias up.   Put in a pot and keep them from freezing and replant in the spring.

Very pretty ! we planted several border Dahlia tubers this Spring the ones that came up mostly got eaten by the rabbits. some did bloom.
