Collecting vegetable seed
Submitted by Heidi_McC on Sat, 11/03/2007 - 12:29
There is a first time for everything.
I grew some great beans this year in my sorry excuse for a vegetable garden. I puropsely left some to harvest for next years crop. I know I need to pick them and dry them in order to plant them next year, but what is the best way to do this. And do you do it the same way for all veggies? I have always spent the money and just bought new seeds every year. This time I thought I would try something different and need ya'lls help.....

Randy
What process did you use to get your beans to keep? Should I let them dry naturally on the vines, pick them and let the whole thing dry, or take the seeds from the pods and let them dry?
Thanks! And if I don't successfully collect enough of my own I will let you know.
I quit watering the beans

I'm going to pray that I did my beans right...
I took the seeds from the shells and dried them on a paper plate & paper towels. I didn't get enough, of that I am sure... so I will be purchasing some more next planting season.
Well next year I will have to leave more to keep for seeds.
It is a learning process...
Thanks Mr Rosie, I would
Thanks Mr Rosie, I would love to try your greasy beans.
Randy those are the beans I grew this year and everyone loved them, which is why I wanted to save what are still out on the vine.... That is if the high winds we had yesterday didn't take them all out on me.
Good Morning Heidi, Well
Good Morning Heidi,
Well the way things look at this time I will have plenty of the Long NC Greasy Bean seed to send you, Randy and a few other folks I might even slip a couple of seed from one of Little Raven's Big pumpkins for you to try if you have room to spare. They are easy to grow after they once get started. All you have to do is stand back and give them plenty of room.
I seen a picture on the net of the new world record pumpkin. Last year the record was 1502 pounds which was just a few pounds more than 2005 but this year it jumped up to 1689 lbs. I guess Raven better get busy and and see if she can beat that. She just went a little over 200 pounds this year. I for sure would like for her to beat one of the neighbors up the creek who grew one last year around 700 lbs. I know she can do it.
Got to throw another stick in the Queen's big stove. She likes to have a big blaze going when she crawls out of the bed in the morning. After what she done to me yesterday evening I should just let the fire go out. I have found out one thing as I get older. You have to be careful who you pick as a friend. I thought I could depend on my honey to stand by me when I was in need of a friend. Boy!!! Was I ever wrong. It was a shock to me to find out that in a room full of people I had no one to turn to.
We will butcher and cook up another big pie pumpkin later today if I can get that lazy woman out of bed. "GRIN"
Hope ever one has a great day today.
Rosie
If you don't get them,
Evening Heidi, Since you are
Evening Heidi,
Since you are going to be a greasy bean patcher I will send you some greasy bean seeds that are still in the pods. These will be beans that hung on the vine and dried out as I was not here to pick them. I was with Mrs. Rosie all night and every night and a good part of the day when she was in the Hospital. We even lost most of the seed because it rained on them and they molded. You can shell these seed out and if they are good and dry you can put them in a air tight container and put them in your freezer and most of them should come up nest spring. I am going to send Mr Randy some also and Gloria and T. I am not sure at this time if I will be able to grow any next year or not so I want to send out what I can now just to be sure we can keep them going.
Most every one that grows these beans save the seed for the next years crop because the seed are hard to find. Hopefully we can get more and more folks growing these beans. I will also send out a few of the Greasy Cut Short bean seed to a few folks and they in turn can help spread them around.
You can start planning your Bean Hut now for next spring, Theresa Done a real good job with her's so next year she will have to eat the ground hogs before they eat her beans and she will have plenty.
I think it is getting near my bed time. For some reason here lately I am ready for bed soon after the evening meal. Must still be trying to catch up for all the sleep that we missed while my honey was so sick. Will try to catch every one early in the morning before I start a new day.
I hope the rest of the week-end goes well for everyone and I still need to reply to several of my wonderful friends here in the bean patch but until I get to every one I want each and every one of you to know that I love you dearly.
Rosie
Mr. Rosie, I thought about
Heidi, I would wait for them
